Agneepath sees record box office collections

Response: The year has turned out to be a blessing for tinsel town Bollywood with the first release, Hrithik Roshan-starrer Agneepath, managing to set a new benchmark at the box office with collections worth a whopping Rs 65 crore during its opening weekend, piping Shah Rukh-starrer Ra.One, which managed only Rs 52.93 crore and was for a while the highest grosser during its first weekend.

Agneepath has not only become the highest revenue getter on Day One but also was the fastest film to break the Rs 50-crore barrier, that is, touch revenues of Rs 50 crore. Salman Khan-starrer Bodyguard is placed third, with collections at Rs 52.5 crore during the opening weekend.

Hrithik Roshan in Agneepath.
Day One total collections of Agneepath stood at Rs 23 crore, which is the highest ever, beating the previous record set by Bodyguard.

Agneepath is expected to touch the Rs 100-crore revenue mark in may be a week or so.

Film Type: Action

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor and Om Puri

Director: Karan Malhotra

Time of movie: 2 hours 50 minutes

Story: Agneepath is a typical tale of revenge. Vijay Chauhan (played by Hrithik) bays for the blood of Kancha Cheena (played by Sanjay Dutt) to avenge the death of his father.

Kancha, in an effort to take over the village Mandwa, charges Dinanath (Vijay’s father) with rape and murder of a handicapped village girl.

This prompts the villagers to turn ballistic and hang Dinanath and throw out Vijay and his pregnant mother (played by Zarina Wahab), who arrive at Mumbai. Now, Vijay’s only aim in life is revenge, and to achieve his goal, he joins the gang of Rauf Lala (played by Rishi Kapoor).

Vijay also meets his childhood sweetheart Kaali (played by Priyanka Chopra). Will Vijay succeed in his bid to bay for Kancha’s blood in Agneepath?

Review: Some may argue that Agneepath is overburdened with action, which takes away the fun element from the film but the movie is ingenious so far as direction and script are concerned, which really hold the movie right till the end.

Every minute in Agneepath is mind blowing and the encounters between Kancha (Sanju) and Vijay (Hrithik) will surely leave you spellbound.

Hrithik does justice to the role of Vijay Dinnanath Chauhan (which was played by Amitabh Bachchan two decades ago).

And, baddy Sanju is at his best in Agneepath. They are supported well by Rishi Kapoor and Om Puri but Priyanka is somewhat disappointing.

There were fears that Hrithik may not be able to deliver when compared to Amitabh’s Agneepath but that really wasn’t the case with the young star performing splendidly.

Well, if you expect some romance to bloom from Agneepath, you may be a tad disappointed. The overdose of violence does not make it an ideal family movie. If you love violence, go for it. If it’s not your type, you should stay away.

But if you have that hangover and compare Hrithik with Amitabh, then may be the film will seem stereotypical and you may get entangled comparing the duo.

Otherwise, if violence rocks for you, Agneepath is for you and surely a paisa wasool film and that is why it has set the box office on fire.
