Tata Zest and Bolt come with European standards style, safety as well as stability

Tata Motors, which has not been able to create a dent in the compact car market for a long time, is finally pulling up its socks to take on competition by not only giving a makeover to its Indica Vista and Indigo Manza but also by rolling out a hatchback Bolt and a basic sedan Zest, which are believed to have maintained European standards.

Both the cars, based on the X1 platform, would be rolled out may be around August 2014. The X1 platform means that the Zest and Bolt will have a new engine, suspension, gearbox (the automated manual transmission in case of the Zest), interiors and electronics.

Tata Bolt.
The two cars will come with the new 1.2-litre Revotron engine. This engine will belt out 85 PS peak power and 140 Nm peak torque.

The Zest compact sedan is offered with a brand new ‘F-Tronic’ Automated Manual Transmission or AMT mated to the 1.3-litre quadrajet 90 PS diesel engine. This is unique and a first by Tata Motors as it is the first AMT diesel car in the country.

The first AMT would be the Maruti Celerio, which hasn’t hit the market either.

While induction of the two new cars – a sedan and a hatchback – in the basic category is a welcome step, this move by Tata Motors is likely to pave the way for cannibalisation in its own stable and could hit the market for the Vista and Manza.

The two cars have been redesigned to the core. Tata Motors is working on a new design lingo with the two cars dubbed Designext. Both the cars were designed at Tata’s Pune headquarters, Design House in Coventry, the UK, as well as in Turin, Italy.

Tata Zest.
The Bolt and the Zest are offered with a new signature grille and wear a sporty look (unlike the Vista and Manza).

The interiors have been refurbished completely with high-class offerings like a five-inch touchscreen Harmann infotainment system with satellite navigation, voice recognition, Bluetooth and text to speech along with phone-enabled navigation.

The two new cars will come with a new electronic power assisted steering which will replace the hydraulic unit.

Suspension compared to the Vista and Manza are much better in the Zest and Bolt. The front suspension is new and the rear one has got a makeover to give a smooth and stable ride.

There is a new ABS system (developed with Bosch) to improve stability and the Zest along with the Bolt would be a cut above the rest as the benchmark for the Tatas this time is European so far as safety, styling and comfort go.
