Can Z3 bring BlackBerry back into limelight?

BlackBerry, which has been losing its market share to brands like Samsung and Nokia, has rolled out a so-called budget handset, the Z3, for Rs 15,990 but it really isn’t a cheap handset, considering Samsung, Nokia and LG have come out with cheaper sets with high-end features but can the Z3 handset bring the company back into the limelight again?

The phone can be brought at select e-commerce portals along with BlackBerry stores.

The BlackBerry Z3.
This is BlackBerry’s first device from new manufacturing partner Foxconn's stable and the Canadian handset maker is eyeing a surge in volume in one of the world's fastest-growing handset markets, India.

The Z3 comes with the BlackBerry 10 operating system and has a 5-inch display along with a 5 megapixel camera.

BlackBerry Z3 offers a 5-inch qHD (540x960p) display. It is propelled by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8230) dual-core processor and 1.5 GB of RAM. The phone runs on BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.1, the latest version of the operating system.

It also comes with a version of BlackBerry Maps that has 2D maps, local search, and 3D voice guided turn-by-turn directions for users in India. The BlackBerry keyboard also offers support for Hindi along with English languages.

The Z3, the 5-inch phablet that operates on the smartphone maker’s latest BB 10.2.1 operating system, happens to be the first phone where BlackBerry is experimenting with Android compatibility.

BlackBerry, once a favourite of corporate and business executives, has lost sheen to the likes of Samsung, Nokia and Apple’s smartphones.

Blackberry India managing director Sunil Lalvani said the Z3 has been designed keeping India’s current requirements in mind. “This is the first handset after our partnership with Foxconn,” he said.

This new Z3 will allow handset users an ease to handle a high-end device and with the introduction of the Android system, a lot of apps can be downloaded. In fact, BB 10 operating system users would soon be able to access Amazon apps store directly from their handsets and may download a litany of apps from there.

So, can BlackBerry, which is still rigid with its pricing, come back into the spotlight with the Z3?
