Lalu’s jail term: No smell of any Congress conspiracy?

As former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav cools his heels in jail, do people smell a Congress conspiracy outside?

Especially, as this comes at a time when Parliament had approved a Bill to disqualify MPs who go to jail and scurried to get it back after the party’s scion Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the government (read the Prime Minister) over seeking approval for such a Bill.

Just a year ahead of the general elections (slated for 2014), Lalu’s RJD is no more a hot party for the Congress. And hence, the party may be drifting towards Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) in a bid to woo him. And the best way to do so is by sending his arch rival (Lalu) to jail.

In the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, neither the Congress nor the BJP would garner adequate numbers. In fact, the BJP, even under the leadership of Narendra Modi or NaMo as he is called in media parlance, would not garner adequate numbers for forming a government.

At best, the party could notch 180 seats alone where as the Congress, thanks to its slew of scams and inability to control prices of commodities, would barely score a century or 110 at the most.

With allies, the BJP could score around 230 where as the Congress 150-170. So, both will have to bank on a third or a federal front or tap regional parties to form a government. And hence, both the BJP and Congress will have to play foul in order to score well.

So, it would surely be the day of regional parties who may want to conjure up a third or a federal front. But these two fronts forming a government without the BJP or Congress support could also be a distant dream.

So, what would prevail? Uncertainty for sure!

Except for a few regional parties like the Telugu Desam (of former Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu), there would be little support from other quarters for the BJP. It is perceived that West Bengal chief minister could tilt towards the BJP.

But that could be uncertain, as Mamata Banerjee would not want to ally with Narendra Modi, who many believe has the blood of the minorities in his hands. Allying with the BJP or giving outside support would antagonise the Muslim community and Mamata surely doesn’t want that to happen.

Especially, when state or assembly elections would be nearing after the Lok Sabha polls are over.

Would we see a set of regional parties running the government with outside support from the Congress? This looks like the only possibility as of now. What it means is that the nation would surely lose direction so far as a clear-cut policy is concerned and this would shoo away foreign investors.

Unless the two main parties – the BJP or the Congress – get a clear mandate, we the people would have to suffer and prosperity for the nation as well as its people would be a distant dream.

So, even as many sniff a Congress conspiracy (with Lalu’s jail term), they must realise that the party would not really benefit from it.
