Mobile number portability to enhance services

Your worries of mobile operators overcharging or phone calls being disconnected owing to clogged network are finally over with the government rolling out mobile number portability (MNP), paving the way for enhanced services. This will allow mobile users to retain the same number while changing operators.

It will just cost Rs 19 to switch over from one operator to another and the switchover will take place within a week. The method to switch operators is very user-friendly.

The mobile customer has to type PORT, give a space and type the cellphone number and send a text message to 1900. A reply will come from 1901 which will provide a unique code and date.

Then the user will have to submit ID and address proof along with a photograph to the new operator by the deadline mentioned. Also, the unique code has to be provided.

Within seven days, a master clearing house will vet for outstanding dues and then the request will be processed. Then, the transition to the new operator will take place.

Mobile operators had allegedly tried to nix this move as it would have paved the way for intense competition but now the only way out for them is to improve services and further lower call rates.

So, the mobile user can expect high quality services, affordable 3G that will allow seamless and high-speed Internet access and there will be stiff competition like never before. This will prompt operators to not only cut rates but actually slash them.

So, who would be the losers and winners? The big two — Airtel and Vodafone — are likely to be the biggest losers unless they come up with competitive schemes and improve connectivity.

And, the gainers would be Idea Cellular, Tata Docomo, Aircel, Reliance Communication (as any Ambani company comes up with the right strategy during a price war) and, may be, Uninor.

Post-mobile number portability, companies are gearing up to lure existing as well as new customers. Idea, Tata Docomo, Vodafone, Aircel have launched TV commercials and other campaigns, making customers aware of MNP and its benefits.

MTS is also rolling out big plans and will come up with a string of schemes, including slashing handset prices for migration between GSM and CDMA customers. Operators are slated to offer a slew of freebies such as free local calls, free SMSs and free data transfer, among others.

The intense competition owing to mobile number portability will see the profits of some companies, that provide seamless services, swell while it may also threaten to obliterate a few operators from the Indian telecom market and this may pave the way for a litany of mergers and acquisitions.
