Singham: The best of action

Response: Singham, directed by Rohit Shetty, witnessed a mind blowing response at single-screen theatres, with some even seeing a full house. The average occupancy at single-screen theatres was around 75-90 per cent. Multiplexes too witnessed a good occupancy of 50 to 70 per cent.

Singhamnet collection stood at Rs 9.1 crore in the domestic market on Day One, making it a clear hit film. The gross earnings were Rs 12 crore, and if international earnings are taken into account, the first-day earnings had inched towards Rs 15 crore.

Film type: Action

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Kajal Aggarwal, Prakash Raj, Ashok Saraf, Sachin Khedekar, Murli Sharma, Sonali Kulkarni, Hemu Adhikari and Sana Amin Sheikh

Director: Rohit Shetty

Time of movie: 2 hours 20 minutes

Story: Singham is about an honest police officer, Bajirao Singham (played by Ajay Devgn), who is from a small village called Shivgad on the Maharashtra-Goa border.

Singham is very popular in his village and settles all disputes of villagers, even if he has to shell out money to do it. He keeps his village crime free.

But the honest cop has to take on an extortionist Jaykant Shikre (played by Prakash Raj) from Goa, who is involved in illegal activities and goes scot free owing to his political connections.

The politically-ambitious Shirke gets bail in a case but has to report to the police station every day. He comes in contact with Singham and is involved in a tiff with the honest police officer, who Shirke feels will come in the way of his dealings.

Through his connections, Shirke gets Singham transferred. Singham later quits his job as he finds too many bottlenecks coming in the way. With the backing of his girlfriend, can Singham rein in Shirke?

Review: Singham is the usual Bollywood masala that highlights the slugfest between the good and the bad. It may be a remake of Tamil film Singam but has the lethal combination of Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty, which is the perfect recipe for a hit.

Singham has the best of action, which is Ajay Devgn’s forte, and Rohit was quick to realise this. The action sequence is one of the USPs of Singham.

The emphatic dialogues do make Singham enticing and will make you awe-struck. Rohit has also brought out the right combination of romance and humour in the film.

Also, Ajay comes in a new form. Like Salman, he also gets a six-pack abs that adds flavour to his villain-slayer role, which he has gone back to after a slew of comedy films.

Ajay Devgn carries Singham all by himself, even though there is nothing new in the story. Kajal Aggarwal, with her glamour, does a good job while Prakash Raj deserves thumbs up as the baddie. Well, Singham is surely a paisa wasool film, if you want to get the best of action with none other than Ajay Devgn.

Rating: 3.5/5
