After Moto G launch, Motorola has to do some brand building

After taking a sabbatical for over two years, Motorola is back again in the Indian market with a bang with the much sought after Moto G smartphone, which has been judiciously priced: Rs 12,499 for the 8 GB variant and Rs 13,999 for the 16 GB model but the company will have to do some brand building if it wants to stay.

Rolled out in the latter part of the previous year in a few markets only, Moto G comes with a 4.5-inch screen with a 720 p resolution. The Moto G is propelled by an average Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor operating at 1.2 GHz.

The Motorola Moto G.
The device is offered with 8 GB and 16 GB storage options and comes with 1 GB RAM. The primary camera is 5 megapixel (which is commendable), while the secondary camera is 1.3 megapixel.

The new Motorola smartphone operates on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) for now, but the handset maker has promised an upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat in just a few days. This may come as a setback.

Also, the phone does not have any software customisation and here also Motorola has promised Android upgrades.

Some of Moto G’s main features include:

4.5-inch HD (720p) display, 329 ppi pixel density

Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) to be upgraded to Android 4.4 (KitKat)

1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor

1 GB RAM

8 or 16 GB internal storage

3 G, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS

2,070 mAh battery

Dual SIM (GSM + GSM)

5 MP rear camera with LED flash, 1.3 MP front-facing camera

The Moto G was only sold on e-commerce portal Flipkart during launch day. The phone has already been listed on the website, and is available for sale. According to Motorola, Moto G would stay exclusive to Flipkart (among online sellers), at least for now.

Motorola had almost been wiped out from the Indian market and with the Moto G (which is not a top notch smartphone though), it is hoping to bounce back amid stiff competition from global as well as homegrown brands.

But of course, the Motorola brand name is still big in India and with judicious pricing it can recapture a big chunk of customers in the basic smartphone market.

Motorola has to launch a slew of phones at different price points to wean away a large chunk of cellphone buyers.

But yes, since Motorola had been virtually absent from the market for over two years, it will have to do some brand building before it brings in other handsets but the Moto G seems to be pretty attractive for now.
