Agent Vinod: Saif Ali Khan charms but not the film
Response: Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor-starrer Agent Vinod could mop up just over Rs 28 crore at the box office during its opening weekend, mainly owing to Saif’s charm. But on the subsequent Monday (its first weekday after the first weekend), revenues fell to Rs 3.5 crore.
Agent Vinod has been made on a budget of over Rs 60 crore and it may be a burdensome task for the film unit to recover costs in a short while.
However, Agent Vinod has provided Saif the biggest opening so far. Previously, the biggest grosser by Saif was Love Aaj Kal in 2009.
Film type: Thriller
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Prem Chopra and Gulshan Grover
Director: Sriram Raghavan
Time of movie: Two hours and 45 minutes
Story: Agent Vinod starts with a series of espionage incidents (connected with the Research and Analytical Wing (RAW) and India), all over the world.
In Uzbekistan, an ex-KGB officer is murdered while in Cape Town, South Africa, a group of international business magnates talk about a nuclear bomb the dead KGB officer had on his suitcase.
The nuclear bomb gets into the hands of terrorists and it’s the job of Agent Vinod (played by Saif Ali Khan) and Dr Ruby or Iram (played by Kareena Kapoor) to not only find the bomb but also its password in order to defuse it.
Vinod is bundled up to Moscow to investigate why his colleague and friend was killed. He then goes to Morocco, where he meets an elderly mafiosi Kazan (played by Prem Chopra) and the charming and mysterious Dr Ruby (Kareena).
Vinod comes to know that the terrorists plan to detonate the nuclear bomb in Delhi. He manages to get the bomb from the terrorists but it is snatched away from him again.
In Agent Vinod, Saif not only has to locate the bomb but also find the password to save New Delhi. Can he do it with the help of Dr Ruby, who has links with Pakistan’s ISI?
Review: No doubt, Agent Vinod gives you a fresh bout of life, has all the styles borrowed from Hollywood and is somewhat different from other spy thrillers.
Saif and Kareena do a great job as a pair. And no one could have played the role of a spy better than Saif – his always-vigilant eyes and cunning face in Agent Vinod show that he is the right man for the role.
Agent Vinod does take cues from James Bond movies, but at the same time, is unique as it has its own desi flavour and style.
However, the story could leave you baffled as it is a series of confusions. At times, you may ask, what the hell is going on?
While watching Agent Vinod, you may find it difficult trying to put the bits and pieces together. The second half of the film does gather momentum but the entire movie can leave you exhausted. Like when you undertake a tumultuous journey.
But it does have its thrills and is somewhat an entertainer. Saif may be charming, but Agent Vinod is not quite so.
