RA.One: Not really a G.One (good one)

Response: Shah Rukh Khan’s RA.One fell short of expectations on Day One compared with Salman Khan-starrer Bodyguard, which raked in around Rs 22 crore on its first day and many say RA.One is not really a G.One (a good one) despite its earnings.

But RA.One managed Rs 18 crore, with collections abroad standing at Rs 6 crore on its first day.

A still from Shah Rukh Khan-starrer RA.One
However, Shah Rukh’s RA.One earned Rs 26.5 crore (gross) with net collections of Rs 18.5 crore on Wednesday itself (Diwali day), becoming the highest grosser on Diwali among all Indian movies.

Second day revenues for RA.One (on Thursday), were even higher, with net collections touching nearly Rs 25 crore.

This is also a record of sorts as it is the highest single-day collection for any Indian cinema ever.

RA.One is India’s costliest movie and has been made on a budget of Rs 150 crore.

Film type: Science fiction

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Shahana Goswami and Armaan Verma

Director: Anubhav Sinha

Time of movie: 2 hours 30 minutes

Story: In RA.One, Shah Rukh Khan plays the role of a goofy gaming expert Shekhar Subramaniam and wants to be a hero in the eyes of his son Prateik, played by Armaan Verma.

But the son thinks otherwise. According to Prateik, villains are the in-thing and heroes have lost their relevance.

Just when father and son hit a rough patch on the issue, Shekhar conceives an incredible game.

Shekhar is able to put in place a very powerful villain RA.One against a less potent good-guy-cum hero G.One, played by Shah Rukh again.

But can good overcome evil?

Review: RA.One was a tad disappointing as it somewhat failed to reach up to the hype and hoopla created over it. The movie, despite coming with a superior technology than that of Rajnikant’s Robot (owing to the high budget), spends a lot of time on inane vulgar jokes.

The action (and thrill) actually begins only when the hero comes to life (till that moment, it is a tad boring). However, the special effects are mind boggling.

Although RA.One can be classified as a blockbuster, there is something amiss in the storyline, which has a whiff of films like The Terminator and our very own Robot. Also, RA.One is quite child-like.

In RA.One, Shah Rukh and Kareena do steal the show but Arjun Rampal seriously needed to stop clenching his teeth while delivering his notorious dialogues, even though his overall performance and his new-look gave the film a shot in the arm.

Yes, RA.One is worth a watch but only a one-time watch and compared to the hype it generated, it’s not really a G.One (good one) even though it is an ideal entertainer for children.

Talaash rides on Aamir Khan wave

Response: Reema Kagti’s Talaash, although not a great film, has ridden on the Aamir Khan wave but saw revenues drop in the third week, raking in just Rs 7.76 crore in the week. But the total earnings have been impressive at a whopping Rs 93.4 crore.

Talaash, also starring Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee in mega roles, had done good business in its first and second weekend, but the earnings declined considerably in the third week.

A still from Talaash.
Talaash had raked in Rs 47 crore at the box office (in the Indian market) during the first weekend and grossed Rs 15 crore on the opening day.

Film type: Thriller.

Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Director: Reema Kagti.

Time of movie: Two hours and 20 minutes.

Story: In Taalash, Aamir Khan is an investigating officer, inspector Surjan Singh Shekhawat, who is probing the bizarre car crash of Armaan Kapoor, a film director.

While digging deep during his probe, the case becomes a maze and Surjan realises something is amiss in the story.

Then surfaces a tragedy in the personal life of Surjan, where he loses his son in a motorboat accident. To overcome the loss, Roshni undergoes therapy while Surjan spends sleepless nights, thinking about his son and in trying to resolve the mystery.

Surjan investigates the mystery behind Armaan’s death and during his probe he meets various shady people, including a pimp, his aide Tehnur (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and a sex worker Rosie (Kareena Kapoor). With Rosie into the picture, the mystery in Talaash on who Rosie is and how she is linked to the car crash deepens.

Review: Talaash does have the Aamir Khan aura but the superstar’s acting in the film is a big dampener. Tears in his eyes and his face swollen – these are the two expressions we get to see on the actor’s face.

Perfectionist Aamir tries to get things right by wearing a grim face but gets it all wrong. The versatile Aamir Khan is simply missing in Taalash.

However, Nawazuddin and Kareena have been really impressive but Rani puts up a grim show.

The storyline of Taalash is somewhat unrealistic and tends to get slow (and boring) towards the end. But there is a thriller waiting. Go watch Taalash if you’re game for some ghostly thriller and Aamir Khan’s aura.

Agent Vinod: Saif Ali Khan charms but not the film

Response: Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor-starrer Agent Vinod could mop up just over Rs 28 crore at the box office during its opening weekend, mainly owing to Saif’s charm. But on the subsequent Monday (its first weekday after the first weekend), revenues fell to Rs 3.5 crore.

Agent Vinod has been made on a budget of over Rs 60 crore and it may be a burdensome task for the film unit to recover costs in a short while.

Saif Ali Khan in Agent Vinod.
However, Agent Vinod has provided Saif the biggest opening so far. Previously, the biggest grosser by Saif was Love Aaj Kal in 2009.

Film type: Thriller

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Prem Chopra and Gulshan Grover

Director: Sriram Raghavan

Time of movie: Two hours and 45 minutes

Story: Agent Vinod starts with a series of espionage incidents (connected with the Research and Analytical Wing (RAW) and India), all over the world.

In Uzbekistan, an ex-KGB officer is murdered while in Cape Town, South Africa, a group of international business magnates talk about a nuclear bomb the dead KGB officer had on his suitcase.

The nuclear bomb gets into the hands of terrorists and it’s the job of Agent Vinod (played by Saif Ali Khan) and Dr Ruby or Iram (played by Kareena Kapoor) to not only find the bomb but also its password in order to defuse it.

Vinod is bundled up to Moscow to investigate why his colleague and friend was killed. He then goes to Morocco, where he meets an elderly mafiosi Kazan (played by Prem Chopra) and the charming and mysterious Dr Ruby (Kareena).

Vinod comes to know that the terrorists plan to detonate the nuclear bomb in Delhi. He manages to get the bomb from the terrorists but it is snatched away from him again.

In Agent Vinod, Saif not only has to locate the bomb but also find the password to save New Delhi. Can he do it with the help of Dr Ruby, who has links with Pakistan’s ISI?

Review: No doubt, Agent Vinod gives you a fresh bout of life, has all the styles borrowed from Hollywood and is somewhat different from other spy thrillers.

Saif and Kareena do a great job as a pair. And no one could have played the role of a spy better than Saif – his always-vigilant eyes and cunning face in Agent Vinod show that he is the right man for the role.

Agent Vinod does take cues from James Bond movies, but at the same time, is unique as it has its own desi flavour and style.

However, the story could leave you baffled as it is a series of confusions. At times, you may ask, what the hell is going on?

While watching Agent Vinod, you may find it difficult trying to put the bits and pieces together. The second half of the film does gather momentum but the entire movie can leave you exhausted. Like when you undertake a tumultuous journey.

But it does have its thrills and is somewhat an entertainer. Saif may be charming, but Agent Vinod is not quite so.

Golmaal 3: Fasten your seat belts (if you have them)

Response: Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 3, with Ajay Devgn in the lead role, has almost trumped Vipul Shah’s romantic film Action Replayy (starring Akshay Kumar) at the box office.

The two mega films were lined up for Diwali release, and according to a cinema hall owner, the Golmaal sequel is running almost to packed houses against Action Replayy, which has logged 50% occupancy and is yet to pick up.

Initial reports pouring in suggest that Golmaal 3 could gross nearly Rs 7 crore on Diwali day (Friday) itself. Another cinema hall owner felt Golmaal 3 is a total entertainer and worth its money. So, people are thronging the theatres for it.

According to a Delhi multiplex owner, Golmaal 3 had registered an occupancy rate of 60-70 per cent while for Action Replayy it was 35 per cent on Friday.

Film Type: Comedy

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Johny Lever, Kareena Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemu, Mithun Chakraborty and Ratna Pathak Shah

Director: Rohit Shetty

Time of movie: Two hours and 20 minutes

Story: The clowns of Golmaal are back and this time their numbers have only gone up. Mithun plays the father of three orphaned children (Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Kunal Khemu) while Ratna is the mother of two orphaned kids – Ajay Devgn and Shreyas Talpade. Mithun and Ratna happen to be erstwhile lovers and Kareena Kapoor helps them resurrect their romance and gets them married. But can the two families live together? The movie revolves around how the two families unite after bouts of rivalry.

Review: This is a very very flippant film but there is one guarantee: you’re going to enjoy it from start till finish. So, in case you manage to find seat belts, fasten them from the beginning. Rohit Shetty, who can now be dubbed the undisputed king of sequels, has a lot of fun in store. For two hours, don't try to make any sense out of the film, just forget any logic and laugh out loud.

All the characters in the film have their discernible role to play and there is no mix up in this. Ajay Devgn is the angry young man who can crack fingers if pointed at him. Johny Lever adds a dhamaka with his bhullakar (short-term memory loss) don role. Arshad Warsi, with his typical tapori character, along with Tusshar Kapoor and Kunal Khemu are well aware of Ajay Devgn’s finger-breaking trait and remember to keep their hands in their pockets while bickering with him. Shreyas also sets the crowds in motion with hisss... stammering.

But the best performer is Tusshar, who rattled the cinema halls with his silence (which he has not been able to do so in a normal role). And, Mithun along with Ratna play the adorable old couple (The Hum Saath Saath Hai types). Mithun’s Disco Dancer songs do add a déjà vu to this Golmaal.

Meanwhile, Kareena plays a perfect matchmaker and Facebook, Ratna’s dog, the perfect irritant to new guest, Mithin, who goes on to live in Ratna’s house after their wedding. In short, just go for it. It’s a 100 per cent paisa wasool movie!
