Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini (A200) and Bolt A71 do not have price advantage

Micromax has at last unveiled the Canvas Turbo Mini (A200), which is up in the company’s portal but the pricing and some other details have not been given yet and it is not slated to have price advantage over most Samsung Galaxy smartphones but the Bolt A71 isn’t a bolt from the blue.

The Canvas Turbo Mini was also earlier listed on FlipKart for Rs 14,500 even though the smartphone roll out was yet to be announced by the handset maker.

The Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini (A200).
The Canvas Turbo Mini is offered with a 4.7-inch (720x1280 pixels) HD IPS display and is propelled by a 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor with 1 GB RAM.

The Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini (A200) comes with a dual-SIM (both GSM) device, which operates on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. According to the company, the handset comes with one regular SIM and a micro-SIM.

The Canvas Turbo Mini offers 4 GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded up to 32 GB via microSD card and comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash. There is a secondary 5-megapixel front-facing camera also.

So far as connectivity goes, the Canvas Turbo Mini comes with 3G, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB and Bluetooth. The Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini has a 1,800 mAh battery, which according to the company, can offer up to 6.5 hours of talktime and 180 hours of standby time on a 2G network.

The Canvas Turbo Mini has with it some preloaded apps like Games (Bubble X Slice and Catch a Mouse), Kingsoft, Hike, Opera Mini and M! Live.

The Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini is the smaller version of the company’s first HD display smartphone, the Canvas Turbo, which was rolled out about three months earlier.

The Bolt  A71

The Bolt A71 is an entry-level device and comes cheap at Rs 6,750. It is offered with a five-inch display with 480x800 resolution.

The A71 is propelled by a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A5 processor with 512 MB RAM and supports dual-SIM functionality. There is also support for 3G, Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth.

Some other features are a 2 MP rear camera, 0.3 MP front-facing camera, only 512 MB on-board storage as well as 32 GB expandable memory. Considering the specs, the handset may be a tad slow on applications compared to Samsung Galaxy phones at this price.

So, the Canvas Turbo Mini (A200) and the Bolt A71 do not seem to be judiciously priced so far as the specs go and may see a feeble response unlike earlier Micromax handsets, which saw commendable sales.

Micromax’s cheap Android phone Andro A60

Micromax had created quite a stir in the Indian handset market two years ago by making phones with high-end features affordable, and in the latest move, it has rolled out an Android-based phone within the common man’s range - the Andro A60 for Rs 8,000 only.

The Andro A60 is loaded with functions such as Wi-Fi, GPS, it’s 3G compatible and has a 600 MHz processor. It has a 2.8-inch touchscreen that supports 320x240 pixel resolution which may not be dubbed as overtly impressive.

But it comes with dual-band GSM support with up to 7.2 Mbps speeds via HSUPA and up to 5.76 speeds through HSDPA. It features a 150 MB internal memory only, which is expandable up to 32 GB via a memory card.

Among other features is a 3.2 megapixel camera which has auto focus. The video is not of a very high quality, something which a buyer needs to ponder about before lapping up the handset.

Also, the 1280 mAh Lithium-Ion battery offers only four hours of talk time. But the Micromax Andro’s biggest USP is its Android operating system and this could make it a contender with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy 5T series.

Micromax is planning to introduce a new line of affordable products, and as a start, it is weighing the option of launching a 3.5-inch touchscreen Android handset along with a seven-inch tablet.

Micromax understood the average Indian’s needs very well and by pulling down prices of high-end phones, which were beyond the reach of the common man, the company has managed to not only shore up its earnings but has also been able create a brand name for itself. Today, it is the third largest handset maker in India and is a name to reckon with.

In March this year, Micromax said it expects a nearly five-fold surge in revenue for the current fiscal year and double of that in the next fiscal as it make inroads into cities and big towns, forays overseas and launches high-end products.

The overwhelming response to its products has prompted the handset maker to target revenues of nearly Rs 3,000 crore next year. Micromax has 10 per cent share in the overall handset market in India and has overtaken LG and Motorola but is behind Samsung and Nokia.

By bringing in affordable phones with a slew of high-end features, Micromax along with other home-grown companies like Lava, Maxx and Karbonn can hope to witness a conservative 50% annual growth in the next three years.

By launching phones like Andro A60 and the Modu T, which it rolled out last month, Micromax is likely to retain its top slot among domestic handset firms and also bring in a substantial amount of anxiety to big players like Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Is Micromax’s Modu T too expensive?

Just by claiming it to be the world’s lightest smartphone (at just 60 gm weight and measuring 7.5 cm), can an upcoming company such as Micromax price Modu T at a whopping Rs 12,500?

The smartphone was rolled out by Israeli entrepreneur Dov Moran’s company Modu last week. The Israeli firm has apparently struck a deal with Micromax. The 3.5G Modu T holds the Guinness World Record for being the lightest touch phone in the world.

The value of the deal between the two companies is still unknown and could hinge on the phone’s sales.

The Modu T is a 2.75 generation or a 3.5 generation smartphone with a 2.2 inch touch screen and has Qualcomm’s Brew operating system and a string of Java applications including Snaptu, Facebook, Flickr and media player TuneWiki.

The 2.2-inch touch screen phone is already available in the market with a 2GB memory card. It can be further expanded to 32 GB.

The handset runs on Android version 1.6 but lacks 3G. However, the Israeli firm hopes to introduce 3G technology soon, and now, it depends on Wi-Fi.

The Modu T has two fy devices, jackets, and if connected, adds new features to the phone. The camerafy jacket converts the phone into a camera with a 5 megapixel resolution and LED flash.

Other features of Micromax Modu T smartphone are a GPS and FM radio. It is also possible to sportfy the Modu T phone and turn it into an exercise companion.

A bullish Vikas Jain, business director at Micromax, said, “Innovation has been a driver for Micromax in India and we believe that by bringing the Modu T phone to India, we will cater to the aspirational segment of the Indian consumers who are early adopters of technology and passionate about electronic gadgets.”

Micromax has lined up international growth plans and hopes to roll out five models in Brazil. It is awaiting green light from Anatel, the telecom regulator of that country.

Jain said the company is contemplating launching tablets in the market. “We are exploring the option of bringing in tablets. But it depends on the consumer response after third generation services are rolled out in the market.”

Although Modu T is light and has a standard camera, its battery life is reportedly very low, there are other handsets in the price range that offer more features and thus the pricing could turn out to be a hindrance factor for Micromax, which has otherwise captured a sizable pie of the Indian market because of its astute pricing.

Micromax Canvas Beat A114R priced judiciously

A new Micromax smartphone has been rolled out, christened the Canvas Beat A114R, and the handset has been priced at a judicious Rs 9,499, considering there are a slew of high-end features that come with the phone.

Currently, only Homeshop18 is selling the new Canvas Beat but the phone could soon go on sales at stores as well as other e-commerce sites.

The Micromax
Canvas Beat A114R.
The new Micromax Canvas Beat’s dimensions are 147.9 x 72.4 x 8.6 mm and the weight is around 145 grams.

The Canvas Beat has a 5-inch touchscreen with qHD resolution and comes with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system, 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB ROM as well as 32 GB of expandable storage as an option.

Besides, the new Canvas Beat comes with an amazing 8 megapixel rear auto focus camera along with a 2 megapixel front camera.

The new Canvas series phone is offered with dual-SIM slots along with dual standby feature. It has 3G connectivity as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The new Canvas phone comes with FM radio along with recording facility.

The 1,900 mAh battery of the Canvas Beat allows five hours of talk time and 150 hours of standby time, as per the information provided by the company.

The previous Canvas 2.2 A114 has almost ditto specifications as the new Canvas Beat. The only exception is that the new phone is a bit thicker (9.7 mm) and heavier as it has a larger battery. The older Canvas 2.2 is cheaper and currently carries a price tag of around Rs 8,500.

There are other phones below Rs 10,000 that could give the Canvas Beat A114R a run for its money. They include the Moto G, Moto E, Lava Iris X1 along with Xolo Q600s, among others.

The Micomax Canvas Beat A114R may seem to be almost a copy of the Canvas 2.2 but considering features like the storage and camera, it may be concluded that the A114R is definitely a good buy, considering it comes for below Rs 10,000.

Micromax A27 Ninja: No price advantage this time

Micromax is on a launching spree of its Android series phones, and the latest in the series is the A27 Ninja, which does not seem to come with a price advantage tag like other Micromax handsets.

The Ninja handset is available for less than Rs 3,500 and online retailers can offer it for a bargain.

The Micromax A27 Ninja.
The Micromax A27 Ninja has a 3.5-inch (480x320 pixels) capacitive touch display and operates on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

It comes with a VGA rear fixed focus camera along with FM Radio.

The A27 Ninja is powered by a 1 GHz Spreadtrum SC 6820 processor, which comes with 256 MB RAM.

It is available with 160 MB internal storage which can be expanded to 16 GB with the help of a microSD card.

The dual-SIM device comes with a 1,400 mAh battery (which offers almost five hours of talk time) and connectivity options in the handset are the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, 2G (EDGE), Bluetooth 2.1 and Micro-USB.

Unfortunately, Micromax does not have 3G support for the A27 Ninja and users will have to be satisfied with just EDGE connectivity.

The Micromax A27 Ninja is available with a Swipe ‘n’ share feature, which is unique and allows a user to share apps, games, photos, videos and songs, among others, with the help of other Android devices by just doing a swipe.

Micromax has managed to keep pace with the growth in the cellphone industry despite being a homegrown brand and recently it was on a roll-out binge, launching handsets like the A30 Smarty 3.0 dual-SIM Android phone for Rs 3,849 and the A65 Smarty dual-SIM Android device for Rs 4,999.

The company is also planning to roll out the A89 Ninja but the handset maker has kept the price under wraps. Earlier, the company had also rolled out the A25 for Rs 3,600 and A68 for Rs 6,500.

The Ninja A27 does not offer 3G connectivity and the camera isn’t a great one. So, the phone is almost a basic handset with just a VGA camera.

Despite this, Micromax has priced the handset at Rs 3,500, which is high compared to other budget phones of the company.

So, with no price advantage this time, Micromax may find it a tad difficult in witnessing roaring sales for its A27 Ninja.

Micromax Canvas Knight: A high-end phone offered with judicious pricing

For the first time, Micromax has rolled out a phone – the Canvas Knight – which does not look like a Micromax handset but instead feels like a snazzy iPhone and the Rs 19,999 price tag it carries shows that besides being the homegrown company’s flagship phone, it could also turn out to be a money spinner, owing to its judicious pricing along with high-end features.

The Micromax Canvas Knight operates on the Android Jelly Bean and comes with 32 GB internal memory but sadly you can only use about 25 GB.

The Micromax Canvas Knight.
But even with that, you can download and operate the litany of apps it carries with élan. There is a 2 GB RAM, which also spurs speed of the handset. It is also actually a Tru Octa core phone.

Therefore, its performance is pretty amazing.

There are two cameras and the rear one gives pretty good pictures even if the light is low, especially while in the indoors.

Comparatively, it gives more enhanced pictures than Android phones in this price bracket. The front camera is an 8 MP one, which is a commendable feature and this can be used for video calls.

The camera, a 16 MP sensor, is a pretty high-end one, which Micromax is providing customers. This feature is somewhat like the one present in the Nokia Lumia 502.

The Full HD IPS panel is one of the USPs of this phone, although the audio quality is commendable (but not great though).

The 2,350 mAh battery is pretty powerful and can last for over 12 hours if usage is average and brightness is low. But that may fall to eight-nine hours if used frequently and video along with games are in use.

In short, some of the Canvas Knight’s features are:

Five-inch IPS display (1920×1080 pixels, 443 ppi)

2 GHz Tru Octa core MediaTek MT 6592 processor

2 GB RAM, 32 GB storage and no microSD slot

16 MP rear camera and 8 MP front camera

1080 p full HD video

3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0

2,350 mAh battery

Android 4.2 JellyBean

The Canvas Knight could be a good choice among Android phones available, with top class parts, snazzy looks and a good array of features.

Actually, Micromax packs a punch with the Canvas Knight, offering a high-end phone with some very judicious pricing as well as styling and could see roaring sales, adding substantially to the revenue of the homegrown brand.

High pricing: Will tech wise Micromax’s fortunes rise with Canvas 4 smartphone?

Well, Micromax has slowly but steadily become a popular brand by turning tech wise and is pricing its products on par with global brands like Samsung and Nokia, and with the official launch of the Canvas 4 smartphone for Rs 18,000, its handsets no more come for a steal.

Yes, the home-grown brand is slowly shying away from offering cheap cellphones as it gains market share and brand value in the country.

The Micromax Canvas 4.
The Canvas 4 offers a 5.0 inch HD (720x1280) display and is propelled by a 1.2 GHz quadcore processor along with 1 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The storage can be enhanced by up to 32 GB by adding microSD cards.

The camera is one of the USPs of the Canvas 4: There is a 13 MP primary camera along with a 5 MP front camera.

The Canvas 4 also has a slew of smart features, which include a pop-up play like video player, allowing owners to simultaneously see videos while performing other tasks.

There is also automatic pause of videos when the user looks away. The phone allows a user to shoot 1080 p videos.

The burst shot mode lets an owner capture up to 99 photos in less than 15 seconds and allows him to choose the best few. But surfing through 99 images could be quite a task!

The smartphone comes with a unique (and new?) feature though. There is a flip-to-mute facility whereby a call can be flipped to put the ringtone in silent mode immediately.

The Canvas 4’s owner can automatically make calls by holding the phone to his or her ear. If the handset is flipped, the Canvas 4’s loudspeaker turns on.

Another enhancement in technology is the ‘blow-to-unlock’ where owners can unlock the Canvas 4’s screen by blowing air on the screen.

The Canvas runs on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. There are facilities including Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and Micro-USB. The cellphone is propelled by a 2,000 mAH battery, which is really powerful.

Micromax Canvas 4 also offers a new cover worth Rs 3,000, which would pave way for the phone to be used even when the screen is covered.

But Micromax must remember that it was its sub-Rs 6,000 users which propelled the company to where it is today. Along with high-end phones, Micromax mustn’t lose focus and must also stress on making its budget phones even better and price them judiciously, like it had done earlier.

With commendable tech additions, along with high pricing (prices aren’t as cheap as it were earlier), will Micromax’s fortunes in India head northward with the roll out of the Canvas 4 smartphone?

Micromax A116 HD phablet may pip Samsung Grand

Micromax is on a launching spree and soon after rolling out the Canvas Superphone A100 and A116, it has brought in the A116 HD phablet (a phone and a tablet), mainly to take on the likes of BlackBerry and Samsung, which have rolled out new handsets recently, but owing to the low pricing, the A116 may pip Samsung’s Grand in sales.

The Micromax A116 Canvas HD is propelled by MediaTek’s MT6589 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and can run on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). The A116 HD comes with a 2,100 mAh battery.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD phablet.
Micromax Canvas HD has a 5-inch HD IPS screen, which paves the way for HD resolution (1280x720) and has a colour depth of 16.7 million, which is commendable.

The smartphone has a slew of additional features like an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and 4X zoom, which obviously could be Micromax’s USP as a handset with such a high resolution camera comes for above Rs 20,000.

There is also a VGA front camera. Other salient features of the smartphone include a 1 GB RAM and 4 GB internal storage, which can be expanded to 32 GB via a microSD card.

Micromax Canvas HD smartphone is likely to hit the market within a week. The company has kept the price under wraps but the buzz is that it could be priced below Rs 15,000.

Commenting on the launch, Deepak Mehrotra, CEO of Micromax, said, “At Micromax, we work hard to innovate and develop great technological experiences for our consumers. The launch of the Canvas HD marks our association with MediaTek to bring forth our first quad-core phone in this category. This will offer consumers a great user experience with latest features and enhanced functionality.”

But in after sales service, Samsung is far ahead and Micromax has to do a lot of catching up in order to beef up its service. It recently had many dissatisfied customers.

During unveiling of the so called Canvas HD phablet, Micromax claimed it imported around 1.98 lakh phablets to India in the October-December 2012 period.

In contrast, Micromax said the figure for Samsung stood at nearly 1.89 lakh Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note II tablets in the same period. Accordingly, other handset makers imported around 38,000 phablets.

In comparison to the Samsung Grand, the Micromax handset could be Rs 5,000 cheaper. But comparing the two phablets, we notice that Samsung Galaxy Grand provides a better camera and a host of innovative features.

However, the Micromax Canvas HD offers high quality display and quad-core processor, which could wean away a string of potential Galaxy Note customers.

So with a price difference, which could be in the range of Rs 5,000, it may be advantage Micromax’s A116 Canvas HD over Samsung’s Grand phablet.

Micromax Funbook could shake up tablet market

Now, Micromax has rolled out a tablet by the name Funbook, which runs on the Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system, and by pricing it below Rs 6,500, the company has paved the way for a big initial push in sales, which could to an extent shake up the market of even big players like Samsung and Apple, that have kept their tablet prices in the range of Rs 30,000.

Micromax’s device comes with a seven-inch (17.78 cm) multi-touch capacitive touchscreen, which provides a resolution of 800x480 pixels. It has a 1.22GHz Cortex A8 processor.

The Micromax Funbook.
The Funbook tablet has an internal memory of 4 GB, which can be expandable up to 32 GB. It is said to support 1080p video playback.

The Micromax Funbook has a 0.3 megapixel (VGA) front camera along with a 512 MB RAM. It comes in two colours - slate grey and midnight black.

The Funbook tablet comes with a 2,800 mAh battery, which offers browsing time of nearly five hours. The tablet is also pretty light and convenient to carry.

The Funbook tablet will be available at over one lakh retail outlets in 50 cities across the country.

Micromax Informatics Limited CEO Deepak Mehrotra has claimed it to be the slimmest tablet in India.

Also, the Funbook will be tagged along with a Tata Photon 3G dongle that will keep you connected while you are on the move. The Funbook also has HDMI connectivity and Wi-Fi Internet connection.

Micromax has tied up with Pearson, Everonn and Vriti to offer digital education to users. On the other hand, the home-grown firm has also chalked out an alliance with Bigflix, Indiagames and Zenga to offer entertainment on its tablet.

The offer includes over 500 courses on myriad educational topics. Not only that, the Funbook is also an entertainment machine, providing access to over 600 movies, 6,000 songs as well as 4,000 videos to its users.

This is a big plus as buyers mainly look to downloading movies on their tablets. And if it’s available ready-made, nothing like it! Moreover, with so many courses on offer, the Funbook could turn out to be a favourite of students, who my shun tablets like the Aakash to procure a Micromax gadget.

Micromax’s tablet, like Aakash, will surely be an aam janata ka tablet, and with its prices being just one fifth of its competitors, sales may soar to unprecedented levels in a price-concerned market like India but gizmos like Apple’s iPad, Samsung’s Galaxy and Motorola’s Xoom will surely have a niche following, owing mainly to their high-end features and their brand name.
