Dabangg: Salman like never before!

Response: Dabangg, the latest flick of Salman Khan, who is paired opposite Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter Sonakshi, has set the cash registers ringing on debut at the box office.

Movie buffs have been swarming cinema halls and multiplexes on the occasion of Eid to take a glimpse of one of their favourite stars in his new avatar. While multiplexes ran full houses, single–screen movie halls reported over 95% occupancy. Dabangg opened to gross Rs 14 crore on Friday, trumping 3 Idiots, which mopped up Rs 13 crore on its first day.

The Salman starrer is set to surpass Raajneeti, this year’s highest revenue earner during its opening weekend. At this rate, Dabangg, made on Rs 18-crore budget, will surely ensure mega bucks for its distributors and stakeholders.

Film type: Action thriller

Cast: Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Arbaaz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia & Sonu Sood

Director: Abhinav Singh Kashyap

Time of movie: Around 2 hours

Story: Set in Uttar Pradesh, Dabangg relates the tale of a corrupt police officer (Salman Khan) and brings to the fore the loopholes in the system. The film mainly deals with the lawlessness in UP and Bihar. Salman plays the role of Chulbul Pandey and his mother (Dimple Kapadia) wants him to bridge the gap between his step dad (Vinod Khanna) and step brother (Arbaaz).

Chulbul marries a potter girl (played by Sonakshi) who is never impressed with him. There is also the local goon (Sonu Sood) who adds to Chulbul’s woes.

Review: A rustic movie set in the interiors of UP, Dabangg is loaded with action. It portrays a mother and son ties along with a complex relationship with a step father and step brother and a wife who is difficult to please. The USP of the movie is its Salman brand which has just scaled up with his new look (sporting a short moustache), the music, dance and the super stunts that we have seldom seen in Bollywood before.

The story may not be original, but Abhinav seems to have dressed it up well. Salman proves his mass appeal again. Sonakshi maintains a stoic silence throughout the film, which hardly lets us judge her acting skills. However, Sonu Sood and Arbaaz have added the needed masala to Dabangg. But at the end of it, that WOW feeling isn't just there like in the case of 3 Idiots. You may not be keen to see it for a second time.

Rating: 3.5/5
