Skoda’s makeover of new Superb may help rev up sales

Skoda is out to give its cars a makeover in order to compete in the Indian market, rolling out the refurbished Superb for Rs 18.87 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) onwards and this step may just help it rev up sales numbers.

After all, the Octavia first got a facelift recently and the Rapid as well as the Yeti are set to get a new look this year.

The new Skoda Superb’s prices start from Rs18.87 lakh for the entry-level model, which is propelled by a 1.8 TSI petrol engine. Then, there is the 1.8 TSI Elegance model priced at Rs 20.65 lakh and the AT version, which comes for Rs 22.27 lakh.

The Skoda new Superb.

The 2.0 TDI Ambition AT variant costs Rs 23.43 lakh and the top model, the Elegance TDI, carries a price tag of Rs 25.20 lakh.

The petrol engine is a 1.8-litre, direct injection, turbocharged and has 160 PS of maximum power. There are two options here: A six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch automatic.

The diesel engine is the ditto two-litre, four-cylinder one that propels the new Octavia. It belts out maximum power of 140 PS and has a commendable torque of 320 Nm. The diesel engine will come with the six-speed dual clutch gearbox.

The Skoda Superb would be offered in two trims – Ambition and Elegance – for petrol and diesel models and only in the Elegance trim for the seven-speed DCT petrol model.

The overhauled Superb is offered with fresh headlights, taillights and new front as well as rear bumper design. Part of the Superb Skoda’s new design is the grille and the new Skoda logo.

There is also a new bonnet design with curves right up to the windscreen. There are fresh front fenders that are in sync with the new front design. Also present are snazzy new 16-inch alloy wheels, which give a fillip to the new looks.

The new Skoda Superb has lots on offer: There are eight airbags, hill hold (that will be of immense help to get a grip if you want to drive in an incline), adaptive headlamps, ABS, ESP and tyre pressure monitoring, among other safety features.

So far as comfort goes, the new Superb comes with dual-zone climate control, 12-way adjustable driver’s seat and leather upholstery.

But the Ambition is offered with all kits other than ESP and tyre pressure monitoring so far as safety goes and comes with standard headlights to the Bi-Xenons. It, however, does not have keyless entry and start, hill hold, electric sunroof, Bluetooth connectivity along with 12-way adjustable driver’s seat.

Skoda’s new Superb will vie with sister company Volkswagen’s Passat, Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Cruze and one of its competitors – the Honda Civic – is already out, so, there’s enough room for revving up sales, in view of the makeover.
