Third generation Skoda Octavia to be rolled out in October-end, Rapid Leisure to beef up brand

The third generation Skoda Octavia is set to reach its buyers, may be around the festive season in October-end, and the Rapid Leisure has been rolled out to beef up brand value. Octavia’s production has started at the company’s facility in Aurangabad, from where the Superb, the Yeti as well as the Laura are being rolled out.

The new generation Octavia adopts its design from the VisionD and MissionL concept that Skoda has showcased during the last few years and is likely to be priced around the Rs 10-lakh mark.

The new Skoda Octavia.
The new Octavia is sleeker than the outgoing Laura and is even sportier. There are three engine options to choose from – 1.8 litre TSI (with 150 bhp @4,000 rpm), 1.4 litre TSI and 2 litre diesel (offering 90 bhp @4,000 rpm), which would power the new Octavia. The 1.4-litre one is the new engine option being offered.

The new Octavia is 90 mm lengthier and 45 mm wider than the previous version while the wheelbase has been raised by 108 mm, mainly giving a fillip to the interiors as well as space at the rear.

Therefore, the new generation Skoda Octavia comes with bigger room for its passengers.

It is very elegantly designed, has enhanced functionality as well as safety features and is offered with a slew of comfort systems.

The new Octavia will be offered with CD MP3 player with an InfraRed remote controller, Xenon headlamps, rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, interior wood décor and electric sunroof along with a climatronic air-conditioner.

The new Skoda Octavia is also high on safety with dual airbags and ABS. Also, the new flagship Octavia variant – Laurin and Klement – will come with a sporty front bumper with large air dam.

The Octavia will be offered in five attractive colours – Anthracite Grey, Brilliant Silver, Magic Black, Candy White and Cappuccino Beige.

Between November 2001 and October 2010, Skoda sold nearly 45,000 Octavias in the country. Skoda has a network of 100 outlets in India and sold 30,000 cars during the previous year. In the first seven months of the current calendar year, it notched sales of 13,800 vehicles.

When launched, the Skoda Octavia will slug it out in the D segment of the automobile market and vie with the likes of Hyundai’s  Elantra, Toyota’s  Corolla Altis, Volkswagen’s Jetta and Chevrolet’s Cruze. This car segment is a crowded one with sales volume not too high.

Skoda Rapid Leisure

Skoda Auto India also rolled out a special edition of its sedan Rapid, christened the Rapid Leisure, for a price tag of between Rs 7.79 lakh and Rs 9.06 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The new Rapid Leisure comes in both petrol and diesel formats and has features like portable navigation system with rear view camera and rear parking sensors.

Both variants will get power from 1.6 litre engines. While the petrol version will come in both manual and automatic transmissions, the diesel car will have the manual option only.

The petrol variant has maximum power of 105 PS at 5,250 rpm with the maximum torque being 220 Nm at 1,530-3,800 rpm. The diesel car has maximum power of 105 PS at 4,400 rpm along with maximum torque of 250 Nm at 1,500-2,500 rpm.

The limited edition would be available for a limited period, according to the company.

While the petrol version of the Rapid Leisure would be available for Rs 7.79 lakh, the diesel variant would carry a price tag of Rs 9.06 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

So, with the third generation Octavia’s roll out in October and the limited edition Rapid Leisure, Skoda is planning to enhance its brand name and storm the Indian sedan market with its new offerings.
