Dum Maro Dum fails to impress
Response: Dum Maro Dum has had a timid start with the film grossing Rs 11 crore on debut day, that is, on Friday. The total revenue is from countries including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, those in West Asia as well as India.
Out of the Rs 11 crore that Dum Maro Dum earned on Friday, just over Rs 6 crore came from the country itself, which can hardly be considered average.
The film was mired in controversy when Goa residents were miffed with director Rohan Shetty over alleged objectional comments about Goa and Goan women.
This could take a toll on earnings in Goa. Also, Shetty has launched Dum Maro Dum at a time when his audience is busy watching the IPL cliffhangers. So, the IPL could also shadow ticket sales of the film.

Story: Abhishek Bachchan, who plays the role of an ACP (Vishnu Kamath), had reached an abyss in his career as well as his personal life. But luckily, he gets a second chance: in Dum Maro Dum he has to clean up Goa and root out the drug mafia from there.
He has to grapple with multiple issues — to clean up deadly gangster Lorsa Biscuta (Aditya Pancholi) and a police department that is riddled by corruption. He also has to save many innocuous people who have been sucked into the drugs trade, including Zoey (Bipasha Basu) and Prateik Babbar.
Vishnu takes the help of a local DJ Joki, played by Rana Daggubati, in his bid to save the innocent lives. Can he accomplish his mission of vanquishing the drug mafia?
Review: Dum Maaro Dum manages to give a good concoction of love, sex, drama, crime and deceit, which have been discretely portrayed very well. But trying to put them all together the director, Rohan Shetty, seems to have got it all mixed up.
Abhishek has been at his best and I don’t remember him performing better in recent memory. He does give Dum Maro Dum a facelift and brings some life into the film but inconsistencies in the characters as well as the story are a few soar points.
The plot in Dum Maro Dum is so haphazard. When you try to get deeply involved with one character and show empathy, you will find yourself being switched to another character.
But the director does manage to create a great deal of success with the don’s character (Aditya Pancholi). The climax of the film is, however, a dampener. You are likely to feel that something is amiss.

Also, the songs in the film lack depth and are somewhat flippant. And the jig in Dum Maro Dum by Deepika Padukone also fails to impress.

Tepid response to Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey
Response: Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey has had a disastrous opening during the weekend with an overall occupancy across the country standing at a mere 10-15%. Mired by mass cancellations, it has grossed a paltry Rs 3.25 crore over the weekend and falls short of even an average film like Break ke Baad. Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is unlikely to pick up in the next week and can fall in the category of a flop.

Story: Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is based on the much-forgotten freedom struggle in Chittagong. Surjya Sen (Abhishek Bachchan) is a school teacher who leads a revolt at Chottogram (Chittagong) in 1930 with the help of his five men who are Sikander Kher, Samrat Mukherjee, Feroz Wahid Khan, Shreyas Pandit, Maninder Singh and two women women (Deepika Padukone and Vishakha Singh) along with 56 teenagers.
They target to debilitate the cantonment, take away the armoury, cut off rail link and raze the telegraph office and take the Britishers hostage. But the plan doesn’t work out and the group members instead find themselves on the run. The retaliation by the British force leads to a few of them being gunned down while others are arrested with some of them being sent to the gallows.
Review: Though Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey saw few takers, reviews haven’t been bad at all. In fact, Ashutosh Gowariker recreates the independence struggle era quite well. Performances have also been commendable. Abhishek does a good job but fails to justify his lead role in the film. The movie also fails to connect to the youth despite Abhishek’s charisma.
That is probably why Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey did miserably at the box office during the opening weekend. After all, history of the freedom struggle is a forgotten chapter for today’s youth. Deepika Padukone, on the other hand, with her limited role, has hardly any opportunity to display her talent even though she does a badminton sequence well.
There wasn’t a need for the director to drag the film for three hours. He could have pruned a few scenes to make it a tad more interesting. But Ashutosh decided to stay loyal to history. Although not for entertainment, you can go for Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey if you want to see a slice of the country’s independence movement replicated to near perfection.
