Special 26: Mind blowing plot
Response: Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher-starrer Special 26 has been topping the box office charts even during the second week, trumping the response generated by (and taking a toll on) new releases as well, owing to its mass appeal and mind blowing plot.
The movie has done well in both multiplexes as well as in single-screen halls across the country, and according to figures, total collections from Special 26 in the country stood at Rs 60 crore after the second week. Special 26 did start on a poor note but the good word passed on by those who saw the movie helped add succour to the film’s earnings.

Special 26 generated nearly Rs 6 crore in the US, Rs 1.15 crore in Australia and Rs 2 crore in the UK. And it looks like many who saw Special 26 may try for another peek at the film.

Story: Special 26 is based on a real-life story of conmen who undertook an income tax raid in the garb of CBI officers during the 1980s.
During the raid, an unknown man, posing as CBI officer Mon Singh roped in 26 men and conducted a raid on the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai and disappeared with jewellery worth lakhs in broad daylight.
In the movie, Ajay Singh (played by Akshay Kumar) and his gang comprising PK Sharma (played by Anupam Kher), among others, make easy bucks by conning those with black money. But these men are not hardcore criminals and have family backgrounds like any other middle class family.
After conning a politician in Delhi and a businessman in Burrabazar of Kolkata, they are eyeing the big fish, a high profile diamond jeweller in Mumbai. CBI officer Wasim Khan (played by Manoj Bajpayee) is after them in their third and final heist. Will Wasim be able to nab these conmen or will he get conned himself?
Review: Although director Neeraj Pandey took the plot from a real-life event, he has got it all right, even though there were some unexplained areas in the storyline of Special 26. The dialogues and the humour are great, family ties have also been shown in a commendable fashion and the climax is the best a thriller could give.
But Kajal Aggarwal’s romance added to the gloom. However, Akshay, Anupam, Manoj and Jimmy were highly impressive and the film scores a perfect 10 as an entertainer.
Special 26 is a 100 per cent paisa wasool movie and a perfect one to keep you busy throughout, thanks to the mind boggling plot.

Lukewarm response to Akshay-starrer Patiala House
Response: Going by the hype and hoopla generated over Patiala House, Akshay Kumar’s latest flick seems to be a disappointment that follows the footsteps of Tees Maar Khan and has not seen adequate response on Friday as well as on Saturday.
Patiala House saw on an average 30 to 40 per cent response in multiplexes and the occupancy in cinema halls (single screen) was even worse: a meagre 10 to 20 per cent. It is astounding that an Akshay Kumar-starrer could perform so dismally.

Story: Akshay Kumar (Gattu) has seen his father dominate, be it in the household, family, or the community, for the last quarter of a century.
Patiala House portrays the difficulty the Sikh boy (Akshay) has to fulfill his dream as his stubborn father’s (played by Rishi Kapoor) word is final and no one can question his decision. Then comes Simran (Anushka), who encourages Gattu, the Southall boy, to fulfill his dream. But can Gattu achieve his target?
Review: Aamir Khan had splendidly blended cricket into Bollywood in Lagaan but Patiala House makes a similar effort but fails to whip up much emotion among cinema buffs.
Patiala House does have its moments and there are certain parts in the movie that are impressive. But overall, the film comes will a slew of loopholes. The story, as well as the screenplay are somewhat flawed and fail to impress.
Akshay’s performance is commendable and even Rishi Kapoor comes up with an above average show. The duo manages to portray a father-son relationship excellently. However, the romance between Akshay and Anushka in Patiala House just isn’t there.
Patiala House is an average film, and if you haven’t got bored with an overdose of Akshay Kumar after his flop films Tees Mar Khan and Action Replayy, you might as well give it (Patiala House) a shot.

All Golmaal with Action Replayy?
Response: Vipul Shah’s Action Replayy has been completely overshadowed by Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 3. While the Golmaal sequel is believed to have recorded an average of over 70 per cent occupancy, the figure for Akki-starrer Action Replayy was a dismal 30 per cent on the first two days.
So, if Rohit manages to gross Rs 6-7 crore in the opening weekend, it would be commendable if Action Replayy manages even one fifth of the earnings.

Story: Bunty (played by Aditya Roy Kapoor) is not keen to wed his girlfriend because his mother Mala (Aishwarya) and father (Akshay) are constantly on the war path. On the occasion of their 35th wedding anniversary, when thing go out of control at an impromptu party thrown by Bunty, he travels back in time to set things right. Will Bunty, after with his time travel, make his parents fall in love, so that they have a happy married life?
Review: Action Replayy is on the lines of the 1980s hit Back to the Future by Robert Zememkis where the son (Micheal Fox) had to go back to the past to see his parents get married. Action Replayy is a similar story but Vipul Shah gets the feel of the 1970s right, and brilliantly so. The retro wardrobe is superb. The film seamlessly manages to integrate science fiction with the masala of Indian films.
But the movie falls short on several counts. It is a total mix up so far as the story goes and you really have to tickle yourself to laugh at the insipid humour. Moreover, even the stars – Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar fail to impress. And, the brilliance of Pritam’s music is simply missing. Also, Om Puri and Kirron Kher have little role to play. Well, all we can say is that you can give it a try… just in case it’s your type.
