SsangYong Rexton: Price is fair but brand is unknown
Mahindra company and global SUV specialist SsangYong’s Rexton, which has been priced cheaper than its counterpart SUVs such as the Ford Endeavour as well as the Toyota Fortuna, also offers a RX7 variant, which is loaded with features and this car has some pedigree also (it is based on the first-generation Mercedes-Benz M-class) but will such a pricing strategy for an unknown brand (SsangYong) work in India, at least initially?
Though a Mahindra brand, SsangYong is virtually unknown in India and the former would have to do some form of ad blitz to bring the Korean brand into limelight.
And, it does not seem that the Rexton, which comes for Rs 18.83 lakh for the RX5 version and Rs 21 lakh for the RX7 variant with automatic transmission, will make a splash in the near term.
The Rexton will be available in more than 13 cities initially.
The Rexton will be available in more than 13 cities initially.
The SsangYong Rexton has a globally famous 2.7 litre, 2696 cc engine which comes with 184 bhp of power and 402 Nm torque in automatic and 162 bhp and 340 Nm torque in the manual transmission.
Both variants come with offroading capabilities - all wheel drive or torque on demand (intelligent 4x4).
The Rexton also offers four airbags, stability program, anti-lock brake system, hill descent control, slip regulation and active rollover protection along with engine immobilizer. It is one of the few SUVs in the world which maintains an unblemished record in safety.
SsangYong cars are known for their safety and comfort along with the smooth drive features.
Besides five-speed manual and five-speed E-tronic automatic transmission, the Rexton SUV also offers touchscreen six-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation, DVD, CD, MP3, FM and USB.
Moreover, there is also the fully automatic climate control system, memory function, outside rear view mirrors, electric sunroof, which comes with tilt and open function, cruise control and audio controls on the steering wheel. The SUV also offers rain sensors and auto headlamps, among others.
Notwithstanding its initial response (which may not be too great), the Rexton is undoubtedly a very powerful and premium SUV, which comes with a litany of top class technology, comfort and safety features.
The Rexton offers premium leather upholstery, eight-way electrically adjustable driver's seat, which includes lumbar support, flat-folding second and third row seats, automatic easy access function for the driver, auto day and night internal rear view mirror, dual-tone beige and black interiors along with metal grain accents.
So SsangYong, a top-class SUV maker which prices its products economically, needs to do a lot of brand-building to make itself known countrywide before Mahindra can see the Rexton’s sales soar to unprecedented levels.
Mahindra special edition Scorpio may rev up sales, Skoda needs ad blitz for new Yeti
We have some budget SUVs like Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and Tata’s crossover Aria raid the Rs 10 lakh SUV market, and in a bid to rev up the Scorpio’s sagging sales, Mahindra and Mahindra has again rolled out a limited (special) edition of the SUV (of which only 500 cars are up for grabs) for Rs 11.88 lakh (Delhi showroom price) while Skoda needs to do a bit of an ad blitz for the refurbished Yeti that will roll out around June.
The new Scorpio will come in a pearl white colour with chequered flag decals along the sides. The alloys are ditto similar to the previous model with the difference being that they are now chrome plated instead of silver.

While the exterior is almost similar to the standard model, the new car does have some additional features. Cosmetic changes in the interiors are a highly-glossy wood finish central console, a gear-shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel and lever.
There are some additional safety features also with the Scorpio now being safer inside, courtesy the new dual front SRS airbags.
The fabric seats are no more there and are now made of tan and beige European leather. The new limited edition Scorpio also has a roof-mounted DVD player, which comes with a nine-inch display.
Despite most of the changes not being major, it is still the same Scorpio that is offered with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder mHawk diesel engine that comes mated with a five-speed manual transmission belting out 120 HP and 290 Nm torque.
Mahindra had also rolled out a limited edition model in the previous year to give the Scorpio brand, which became highly popular a couple of years back, a fillip.
Mahindra is coming up with the overhauled version of the Scorpio next year, and before that, the company does not want to see the current version’s sales dwindle beyond a point.
Skoda Yeti
Meanwhile, Skoda will roll out a refurbished variant of crossover SUV, the Yeti, in about two months, which will feature fresh styling elements and a new-look interior. On the exterior, the 2014 Skoda Yeti will have a new grille, headlamps and bumper.
The Skoda logo, similar to that of the new Superb, will be on the bonnet of the Yeti. Earlier, it was on the grille. There are changes to the Yeti’s rear also. The overall design is ditto although the new Yeti will have fresh tail lamps.

Inside, the dashboard, the layout will be the same. However, the steering wheel and the clocks as well as the audio system will see a change.
The Yeti will remain a diesel SUV. The engine will be the similar two-litre diesel from the car now in use and will be of two versions: the 110 PS for the front-wheel drive Yeti and 140 PS for the all-wheel drive variant.
The new Yeti may come with a DSG dual clutch automatic.
The size is one of the advantages of the Yeti crossover as it offers high-end features packed in a sleek design. But the Yeti would be a crossover mainly for the city’s roads and an automatic option in the new model could do a world of good to Skoda.
Mahindra in brand building bid with XUV500 Sportz roll out
Mahindra and Mahindra has been going for brand building of its SUVs and after the Scorpio special variant, it has rolled out a special version of the XUV500, christened Mahindra XUV500 Sportz, of which only 1,000 units of this variant will be up for grabs.
The limited edition SUV is based on the top version, namely W8 Mahindra XUV500, and carries a price tag of Rs 13.5 lakh. This is Rs 25,000 dearer compared to the XUV500 W8 vehicle.

The Mahindra XUV500 Sportz will see changes in the exterior as well as the interior such as red-and-black body decals on the bonnet as well as the doors. Moreover, the fog lamps housing, roof rails and door handles also come with red highlights.
There is also a sporty new alloy wheels with red inserts as well as a Sportz badge on the C-pillar.
The interior will get refurbished leather-and-fabric upholstery along with a six-inch touchscreen that comes with rear camera. The Mahindra XUV500 Sportz version will also have the standard micro-hybrid technology, climate control, headlamps, LED parking lights, automatic wipers and electrical ORVM.
Speaking during the launch of the XUV500 Sportz, Vivek Nayer, chief marketing officer (automotive division), of Mahindra and Mahindra averred, "We are happy to roll out the limited edition XUV500 Sportz for our distinguished customers. We feel that it will create a new benchmark in exclusivity and further beef up the XUV500's appeal, which is strong, amongst customers."
XUV500 Sportz will come along with 140 bhp (103 Kw) mHawk engine, which belts out 330 Nm torque and a six-speed transmission.
The XUV500 is also offered with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with rollover mitigation, six airbags (front, side and curtain), ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Hill Hold Control and Hill Descent Control. These are stunning safety features for an SUV in the Rs 13 lakh bracket.
Ever since the launch of XUV500 in the year 2011, Mahindra and Mahindra has sold an amazing 75,000 SUVs so far. The target for Mahindra is clearly reaching the one-lakh mark. And, this special edition will only do brand building in a big way and rev up numbers of the Mahindra XUV 500 substantially.
Xylo H-Series to add power to Mahindra sales
In the wake of a rev up in India’s SUV segment, Mahindra and Mahindra is surging miles ahead – it first brought in the Rexton from SUV specialist SsangYong’s stable, and now, it has added a new powerful H-Series to its Xylo (that has been dogged by dwindling sales lately) – which like the MPV’s high-end E9 version, will be powered by the refined mHawk engine.
The coveted H-Series mHawk engine offers high power, high performance and high mileage.
The power-packed mHawk engine, with 120 PS power and 280 Nm torque, will be offered in all variants of the H-Series, namely the H4, the H8 and the H9.
These new models will come with driving comfort even on bad city roads and highways.
These new models will come with driving comfort even on bad city roads and highways.
The ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of the Xylo H-Series would be 14 km per litre, which is commendable for an SUV.
The new H-Series comes with a new transmission, which paves the way for effortless gearshift.
The new H-Series comes with a new transmission, which paves the way for effortless gearshift.
The H-Series Xylos have been attractively priced in the wake of a slump in the car market and the dwindling popularity of the Xylo series cars owing to cannibalisation by Mahindra’s own products, the Quanto, on the lower end and the XUV on the higher side.
Starting at an economical price of Rs 8.23 lakh (ex-showroom price for the BS IV variant), the Xylo’s three H-Series variants – the base H4 (with ABS option), the H8 (with ABS and airbag option) and the feature-packed H9 version with a litany offerings like Voice Command Technology (VCT), Cruise Control and Digital Drive Assist System, are likely to hot up the Indian market with such high-feature offerings coming for almost a steal.
The new H-Series SUVs are also equipped with pivotal safety features like ABS with EBD, dual airbags, Extra Stability Technology Suspension (EST) and Reverse Parking Assist, among various other top-end features.
The Xylo H-Series cars are on sale at Mahindra dealerships across India and will come in one new colour – Dolphin Grey, (offered in the H8 and H9 models) besides being available in five other existing colours.
All additional customer benefits being offered in the H-Series SUVs do not have any charge (compared to the outgoing E-Series models), thereby coming with even a greater value for customers.
Speaking at the unveiling of the new H-Series Xylos, chief executive (automotive division) of Mahindra, Pravin Shah said, “Since its introduction in 2009, the Xylo has carved out a unique identity for itself in its class with regard to space and comfort. The addition of the world-class mHawk engine will further boost its performance and take it a notch higher in its segment. Equipped with higher power and enhanced efficiency, we are sure that the new Xylo H-Series would be a popular choice among the discerning SUV buyers.”
So, economical pricing may add power to the Xylo H-Series SUV sales.
Brand building may help SsangYong Rexton pip Fortuner
Auto giant Mahindra and Mahindra has rolled out the Rexton from sports utility vehicle or SUV specialist SsangYong’s stable, and with the price being below the Rs 20-lakh mark, the Rexton will compete with Toyota’s Fortuner and some brand building may help the Rexton trump the Fortuner.
The Rexton SUV is priced at Rs 17.67 lakh (manual variant) while the automatic version will come for Rs 19.67 lakh. The new Rexton will be available in two variants only, the RX5 MT and RX7 AT AWD and come only in the diesel option.
This is SsangYong’s first SUV launch in India after Mahindra took over the Korean giant. In November 2010, Mahindra and Mahindra acquired 70 per cent in the ailing SsangYong Motor Company of Korea for $463 million (nearly Rs 2,000 crore).
The Rexton that will be available is the third generation model or the Rexton W which comes with sophisticated styling, luxurious interiors and superior handling.
It will vie with the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Ford Endeavour.
The high-end SUV market in the country is dominated by Toyota Fortuner, which grabs nearly half of the total monthly 2,500 unit sales in the segment.
“SsangYong is a strong player in SUVs and we are confident that it will do well,” president of Mahindra's automotive division Pawan Goenka, who is also chairman of SsangYong, said.
The Rexton W has evolved in terms of looks. The previous Rexton was quite clumsy but the Rexton W has great looks and is fairly spacious too. The new grille and the chrome on the front end make it the cynosure of all eyes.
The powertrain is also a Mercedes-derived unit. The 2.7-litre engine of the Rexton is the same engine that propelled the E-Class and M-Class cars a couple of years back.
The high-end RX7 automatic Rexton has a more powerful (184 bhp) engine but the RX5 manual has a switchable four-wheel-drive system and the 2.7-litre engine can belt out 162 bhp power.
Inside, there are plush leather seats which are highly comfortable. You can compare the comfort level to even high-end cars like the BMW and Merc models.
The steering wheel comes with a litany of buttons, which may seem confusing initially. But once you get used to them, you’re almost on a song.
The top-end RX7 model comprises a touchscreen audio system with built-in GPS, sunroof auto headlights, parking sensors, airbags, ABS, wipers and an 8-way adjustable driver’s seat. Considering the external looks, the space inside seems to be somewhat less.
The SsangYong Rexton has been prudently priced (below the Fortuner) and some ad blitz and brand building by Mahindra may help it pip the Toyota Fortuner and lead the high-end SUV market in India in the middle term.

Four-seater electric car e2O can run on sun’s power
e2O (ee-too-oh), a partially electric car (four-seater) that can run on the sun’s power, is set to hit the roads in India in about a couple of months, courtesy the Mahindra Group.
e2O, the latest offering from the Mahindra stable, would be a unique car in India and revolutionise car fuel technology not only in the country but also globally, as this technology is still in its nascent stages.
The e2O will meet the ‘5-Cs’ framework of clean, convenient, connective, clever and cost effective.
The four-seater electric vehicle has already got its stamp of approval as a road-worthy car.
The four-seater electric vehicle has already got its stamp of approval as a road-worthy car.
Some striking features of the e2O include a 48-Volt 29 KW electric motor, maximum power of 39.4 bhp, top speed of 105 km per hour, wheel arches and super styling with aerodynamic cues.
The electric car is likely to be priced around Rs 5 lakh, which will be a steal for a four-seater electric car in India.
The ‘e’ in Mahindra’s e2O depicts energy of the sun, which is not only limitless but also clean. The ‘2’ reads ‘to’ and signifies the connected technologies in the car, where as the ‘O’ depicts ‘oxygen’, which sustains our existence on earth.
The car has a range of 100 km and is not so impressive compared to American electric cars, which can belt out at least double the range. But this 100-km range is good enough for city driving.
The e2O can be charged through a 15 ampere outlet, or by use of the ‘Sun2Car,’ whereby the car has to be parked under a series of solar panels that generate electricity, which is transferred to the car’s lithium ion batteries.
According to the auto giant, this (the e2O production) is the first step towards creating an entire electric vehicle value chain and ecosystem by the Mahindras.
So, if a car buff wants to remain within the confines of the city, this car may seem suitable but for the adventurous types who opt for long-distance jaunts, it would be unsuitable.
Mahindra has the REVAi (a two-seater) electric car in its stable but the e2O is the first four-seater electric vehicle in India.
The price of petrol is going up by leaps and bounds, and with the government planning to impose a duty on non-commercial diesel cars, electric vehicles could be the only way out.
But high pricing (if any) along with lack of awareness could be the two factors hindering the growth of electric vehicles in India.
But high pricing (if any) along with lack of awareness could be the two factors hindering the growth of electric vehicles in India.
The e2O will be built at a Bangalore unit and Mahindra plans to make 30,000 cars annually. So, can Mahindra cash in on the (new) concept of the sun’s clean energy to drive sales of the e2O?
Will new Mahindra Verito break low-sales jinx of Logan?
Mahindra and Mahindra has finally come out with a new Verito (the erstwhile Logan), which seems to be attractive and could break the jinx of low sales, which the Logan witnessed throughout ever since it was launched as a joint venture of Mahindra as well as Renault.
But now, the French auto giant (Renault) has severed ties with Mahindra, which is going solo in making the Verito (name changed after Mahindra took full control) and the new car is very attractively priced between Rs 5.27 lakh and Rs 7.14 lakh (prices in Delhi).
Moreover, the car will come in both petrol and diesel options and take on Maruti Suzuki’s Swift, the D’Zire, the Toyota Etios and a host of other cars like the Volkswagen Vento and Hyundai i20.
For instance, the D’Zire now comes for Rs 4.88 lakh-Rs 7.35 lakh, while the Etios is priced from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.
Though dearer by Rs 5,000 to Rs 17,000, the new Verito is still attractively priced compared to its peers.
So, here is a clear-cut price advantage for Mahindra’s Verito, which also has great new looks, especially the front grille (in fact, it is a complete overhaul so far as the design goes).
The petrol version is propelled by a 1.4-litre engine and is priced between Rs 5.27 lakh and Rs 5.49 lakh for two variants and the diesel version has 1.5-litre engine with three options that carry a price tag of between Rs 6.26 lakh and Rs 7.14 lakh.
Changes in the interior include a new dashboard with lighter colours and new-look controls. Now, there are rotary knobs for climate control, buttons for internal circulation and a music system as well.
Power windows are now operated through switches which are placed on door pads, resulting in a lot more convenience to the driver and other occupants. There is a two-tone instrument panel, fresh upholstery and a centre console that come with a Variometric AC with ergonomic controls.
The exterior has new design tail lamps and rear bumper along with side cladding, revised side bumper and boot lid.
The exterior has new design tail lamps and rear bumper along with side cladding, revised side bumper and boot lid.
Mahindra Verito 1.4-litre petrol comes with 75 hp at 5,500 rpm and 110 Nm torque at 3,000 rpm. The 1.5-litre diesel engine belts out 65 hp at 4,000 rpm and 160 Nm torque at 2,000 rpm.
“We have trebled Verito sales in the last couple of years. During the last financial year, we sold 18,000 Veritos and this year we are looking to outdo the industry average,” Mahindra and Mahindra CEO (automotive division) Pravin Shah said.
Shah revealed that the company is capable of producing 20,000 Verito cars at its plant in Nashik, Maharashtra. He added that, “We don’t mind being a single car company if we can add value to our customers.”
The Logan’s numbers had remained sluggish, with the car clocking sales of around 400 units (average) every month around May 2010. But after August 2010, sales had risen by 150 per cent.
So, the potential is huge in the days to come, and the new Verito, with its economic pricing, great looks, diesel option and Mahindra support could break the Logan jinx and find a place among the top cars (in sales) in its category (the Maruti Suzuki indefinite strike in Manesar has also come as a boon for Mahindra and other car makers in the country).

Mahindra plays price game with mini-SUV Quanto
So, Mahindra and Mahindra is now playing the price game in the SUV market with the launch of mini-SUV Quanto for below Rs 6 lakh (price starts at Rs 5.82 lakh).
The Quanto, which has its high-end model priced at Rs 7.36 lakh, has been developed on the Ingenio platform, similar to the Xylo. The Quanto mini-SUV comes in four trims, C2, C4, C6 and C8, the last one being the top variant.
The mini-SUV is propelled by a modified version of the mHawk diesel engine termed mCR100. The 1,493 cc engine belts out 98.6 bhp and 240 NM torque and these have been attached to a five-speed gearbox.
According to Mahindra, a more powerful four-cylinder engine version is on the anvil, which is likely to be offered with a 4x4 option.
The 100 bhp engine along with the 240 NM torque will make the Quanto’s performance impressive.
With hike in diesel prices, Mahindra has lots in store on the mileage front. Mahindra’s Micro Hybrid Technology allows it to offer a fuel economy of 17.2 km to a litre on the Quanto.
The top C8 version comes with alloy wheels, power windows, a slim Digital Drive Assist System (DDAS), driver seat height adjust, electric wing mirrors and an audio system with CD, MP3 and radio along with body-coloured bumpers.
There is also a rear defogger, ABS, front airbags (for the driver as well as the passenger), reverse parking sensor and fog lamps.
The C6 trim is nearly the same except for the alloy wheels, the reverse parking sensor as well as airbags. Mahindra’s Micro Hybrid technology will be offered on all variants except the basic C2 trim.
The Quanto sub-four metre size makes it one of the smallest SUVs in the market. A new category of compact SUV, the Quanto is the only vehicle with a 5+2 seating capacity.
“The Quanto, which is our first compact SUV, will create a new category within the SUV segment,” president of automotive and farm equipment divisions of Mahindra Pawan Goenka said.
Mahindra has a capacity to make 7,000 vehicles at its Nashik unit, which will manufacture the Xylo as well as the Quanto. The Quanto will vie against Renault’s new SUV, the Duster, but the Quanto will come with a big plus, which is price advantage.
Mahindra hopes to sell 200 Quantos every month (quite a conservative target, though). But these are estimates for the initial months and sales could go up manifold in a year, considering that the company sells around 2,500 Xylos every month.
Mahindra will begin exporting the Quanto to countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka along with South Africa in the next three to four months. Later, the company plans to target European countries along with South America.
By creating a mini-SUV segment and by playing the price game, Mahindra can hope to jack up sales target to at least 1,000 cars a month for the Quanto in the next quarter (against the target of only 200 units).

Will SsangYong drive Mahindra’s SUV ambitions globally?
Now that Mahindra and Mahindra has acquired 70% in South Korean automobile maker SsangYong Motor Company, it will have to chart a global marketing strategy to give a major push to SsangYong’s sports utility vehicles or SUVs, which are among the best in the world. Mahindra had paid $463 million for the Korean firm which was valued a tad over $300 million.
SsangYong is in a dismal state. It has a debt of over a whopping $600 million and has been mired in losses. SsangYong had registered losses of $344.6 million during the first half of 2009 and its revenue for the period had fallen by more than half.

| The SsangYong C200 compact SUV |
Moreover, the global financial slump of 2008 also hit the company, leading to labour strikes at its units. So, a major challenge lies ahead of Mahindra to turn the Korean car company around. This is likely to take nearly a couple of years.
The deal will, however, bring some of the finest SUVs such as the SsangYong C200 compact SUV as well as the worldwide distribution network and technical resources of the Korean auto firm under the Mahindra fold.
SsangYong has a good presence in Europe and South East Asia and Mahindra needs to build up in these regions first before its spreads its wings globally. In other words, Mahindra must tread cautiously and not rush for worldwide presence.
So far as Mahindra’s plans go, the company will bring in SsangYong’s flagship Rexton and ready-for-launch Korando C SUVs in a completely-knocked-down (CKD) format into India. Both these high-end SUVs will slug it out with Toyota Fortuner, GM Captiva, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Endeavour and Honda CR-V, among others.
SsangYong’s two SUVs are likely to be priced economically around Rs 15-20 lakh, and with a higher per cent of localisation in place, prices could come down in future.
In a company release, Pawan Goenka, president (automotive and farm equipment sectors), Mahindra and Mahindra, said, “The coming together of Mahindra and SsangYong will lead to a competitive global UV (utility vehicle) maker. Mahindra is competent in sourcing and marketing. Whereas, SsangYong has strong capabilities in technology. We want to leverage combined synergies by investing in a new SsangYong product portfolio, to gain speed in the world markets.”
The deal was struck after a series of meetings between the two companies since August when the Korean company selected Mahindra as the preferred bidder among the seven in the fray. Another Indian company run by Dunlop’s Pawan Ruia also bid for the ailing Korean auto firm but unsuccessfully.
Despite 70 per cent acquisition by Mahindra, SsangYong is likely to function in an autonomous manner, with primarily a Korean management.
The SUV market in India may be hotting up but it is still in the nascent stages. As per estimates, the market for SUVs (total) could be around 40,000 units annually in the next four to five years. As of now, Mahindra would do well to sell 1,000 SUVs in a year.
Mahindra has tasted success with all its vehicles, including the Bolero, Xylo and Scorpio but its joint venture with Renault, which makes the Logan, had to bite the dust. Mahindra is likely replicate its success in India with the SsangYong buy but how successfully it leverages it marketing skills abroad is to be seen (it is unlikely to taste success in the short term though).

Mahindra’s Thar may storm towns, villages
Mahindra and Mahindra is banking on the old-world charm of the ubiquitous Commander Jeep to spur sales of the relaunched version, christened the 4 x 4 Thar CRDe, under a new platform, which it has priced at an aggressive Rs 6 lakh. The price will, however, vary in different cities: while in Mumbai it will come for Rs 6.28 lakh, in Delhi it will carry a price tag of Rs 5.99 lakh.
There is also the DI BS III variant that will be available in Bangalore, Delhi, Jaipur and Mangalore this month itself for Rs 4.47 lakh. Elsewhere in India, it will be launched in the first month of the New Year. The Thar DI is a lifestyle vehicle for the rural market with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive options.
This strategy of re-launching the Jeep is unlikely to find many takers in cities as the company’s own urbane models such as the Xylo, Bolero and Scorpio could cannibalise (or eat into) into the Thar’s sales.
The company, however, is eyeing a big push in towns or semi-urban areas and villages. With its economical pricing, the Thar may see a good response in these markets. Mahindra is also targeting people who prefer the retro look. But among India’s youth or even with those under the age of 40, which probably makes up 60 per cent of India’s population, there are unlikely to be many takers.
Mahindra and Mahindra is already selling this vehicle in South Africa, pricing it around Rs 9.5 – Rs10 lakh in that country.
“Realising the potential of this emerging segment of off-road enthusiasts and lifestyle seekers, we have rolled out the Thar in India. The Thar is an extension of our legacy and what Mahindra stands for,” chief executive, automotive division, Rajesh Jejurikar said.
But Mahindra’s distribution network is a big plus. The Thar will be distributed via the company’s 200 dealers throughout the country. Mahindra said it spent Rs 5 crore on the Thar’s development.
The Mahindra Thar is a replica of the famous Commander Jeep 5 and comes with enhanced suspensions and features. Its ground clearance is excellent and a journey though a rough terrain could turn out to be almost a cruise.
It is powered by a 2.5 litre CRDi diesel engine. “The Thar is a manual 4x4 machine along with a robust CRDe engine 77 kw (105 BHP) and drive by wire technology which allows variable speeds and acceleration. To tackle this excess power, Thar CRDe’s tough ladder frame chassis has been optimised to allow crisp handling. A hi-tech suspension layout of IFS and abuse-resistant rear leaf springs paves the way for a great balance between ride and handling,” said Rajan Wadhera, M&M’s chief executive (TPDS).
Mahindra has always been a specialist in marketing its vehicles. Its SUVs have been logging robust sales while its recently launched two-wheelers Stallio and Mojo have seen sales rev up by a mind blowing 125% in November. But Logan, made through a joint venture with Renault, is yet to see its sales reach satisfatory levels.
So, going by these trends, Mahindra could hope to notch up decent numbers with the Thar, mainly in the semi-urban and rural markets, and of course, with the adventure-loving urban car buff.

Will new Mahindra Xylo take on competition?
So, Mahindra and Mahindra has made a judicious tactical move to take on competition (read the Toyota Innova and Tata Aria) with the Indian company rolling out a new Xylo with a litany of changes (it now comes with more than 50 styling changes), which include the first ever Voice Command System also.
The new Xylo will be available in five variants and comes for Rs 7.37 lakh for the entry model and Rs 10.25 lakh for the high-end variant, christened the E9. It will come in six colour options – Diamond White, Fiery Black, Toreador Red, Java Brown, Mist Silver and Rocky Beige.
There will be three engine options: the m Hawk engine (120 BHP–88 KW, 14.02 km per litre) with an all new transmission 5 MT-320, the mEagle engine (112 BHP–83.2 KW, 13 km per litre) and the highly fuel efficient mDI CRDe engine (95 BHP–68.7 KW, 14.95 km per litre).
“The new Xylo is the sixth new launch from Mahindra’s stable this financial year,” Mahindra CEO (automotive division) Pravin Shah said.
Well, the new models will not come cheap with these variants being nearly Rs 15,000 more than the previous models.
Shah did not rule out its products being cannibalised (where one product of a company eats into the market of another product of the same company), although he hoped it wouldn’t happen.
“If at all some kind of cannibalisation takes place, that’s okay with us as long our products are sold,” Shah averred.
On the export strategy of the company, Shah said, the focus will be right-hand drive countries, starting with South Africa, where Mahindra had opted for the global launch of XUV500.
Then, it will make inroads into the Latin American countries. But how soon, the company did not specify.
The company clarified, “We will stop production of the old Xylo and the new model has entered the market already. Only the top model E9 will be available in a month,” senior marketing vice-president for Xylo and Bolero Vivek Nayyar said.
Even with a price rise of nearly Rs 15,000, Mahindra’s competitors are mainly Tata Aria (which is priced Rs 4 lakh higher) and Toyota Innova (which starts from Rs 10 lakh).
Moreover, the new Xylo is more fuel efficient compared with the Aria and Innova. The new Xylo has a mileage of 14 km a litre (under ideal conditions though).
The new Xylo has a commendable torque and higher power at 120 Bhp. But the Innova offers only 105 Bhp (even though the pricing is steep).
The Xylo has become one of the highly successful cars among SUVs, selling as many 90,000 units and now has about 30 per cent market share in the SUV segment.
Even with the steep Rs 15,000 hike in price, buyers are most likely to flock for the Xylo, owing to an almost complete overhaul of the offerings as well as the company’s economical pricing strategy for the new Xylo SUV and this could help Mahindra take competition head on.

Will Executive Edition boost Mahindra Verito’s sagging sales?
Mahindra and Mahindra’s fortunes haven’t turned for the better after it scrapped a pact with Renault for making the Logan, and after rechristening it as Verito, the auto giant is now targeting the Rs 7 lakh bracket buyers (corporate executives) as well as the burgeoning working class with the Verito Executive Edition, which the company hopes will boost the car’s sagging sales.
Whenever sales of a car isn’t at a satisfactory level, auto giants try to give it a push by rolling out special editions with exclusive add-ons but at a pretty steep price to enhance brand value of the car.
The Verito Executive Edition comes for a price of Rs 7.75 lakh (showroom).
True to its name (Executive Edition), the new variant comes with some snazzy interiors and exteriors.
The interiors comprise premium Italian leather seats, leather steering wheel cover and door insets that match.
The interiors comprise premium Italian leather seats, leather steering wheel cover and door insets that match.
There is top-end touchscreen navigation system in the car, which can act as the perfect guide for the driver.
The entertainment system is also high class and has Bluetooth with it. Other frills that come with the car are alloy wheels, Executive Edition badging and body decals, which give a boost to the car’s exterior looks.
There is still more to it… the edges, which get a stylish curve, and there are blue vision headlamps that come with the Verito Executive Edition only.
Speaking about the Verito Executive Edition, Pravin Shah, CEO of Mahindra’s automotive division, said, “The Verito Executive Edition will give a premium and aspiration quotient to the executive sedan. Together with the proposition of space and mileage, which the Verito is known for, this new car will come with tantalising premium interior and exterior features.
“The features of the Verito Executive Edition have been judiciously chosen to meet the rising customer demand and we wanted to make it a stylish sedan. This move by us will surely take the Verito to the next level in terms of style, premiumness, convenience along with comfort. The Verito Executive Edition thus further elevates status of the Verito owner.”
But will the Verito (or the erstwhile Logan) remain jinxed or will these features help in boosting the stagnant sales of Mahindra’s sedan, which stands at an average 1,500 cars a month. Compared to this, the figure for its competitor, Maruti Suzuki D’Zire, is 13,000, which is eight times more?
So, Executive Edition of the Verito may beef up sales in the very short term but in the medium to long term, Mahindra would have to rethink its strategy to boost the car’s image further and eliminate the Verito’s sagging sales.

Toyota Etios, Liva (Xclusive) limited editions to take on competition, Mahindra’s new Scorpio may spur sales
Toyota’s plan of offering Xclusive (or limited editions) of its Etios and Liva is primarily to beef up presence among the people and with more competition gripping the SUV market with the launch of the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport, Mahindra is also planning to stay afloat by launching a special edition (limited to 500 cars) in order to build its brand further.
Well, Toyota has again opted to modify its Etios range of cars as well as the Liva, and this time, has brought in its Xclusive editions that come with dual tone interior trim and seats, Bluetooth enabled stereo, a chrome accentuated gear knob, rear parking sensors and Xclusive badging on the boot.

Engines for the Etios are a 1.5 litre petrol one offering 90 PS power and 132 Nm torque along with a 1.4 litre diesel engine offering 68 PS power and 170 Nm torque.
The Etios Liva is being offered with a 1.2 litre petrol engine with 80 PS power and 104 Nm torque and a 1.4 litre diesel engine with 68 PS power and 170 Nm torque.
The Etios and Etios Liva Xclusive editions mainly contain cosmetic changes to the ‘G’ trims of the hatch as well as the sedan. The Xclusive editions will come in both petrol and diesel versions for both the Etios and Etios Liva.
The Xclusive editions are costlier by Rs 5,500 for the Liva and Rs 6,000 for the Etios compared to the current G versions.
The current G variants of the Etios and Etios Liva come with features like power steering, power windows, internally adjustable outer rear view mirrors and air conditioning.
Prices of the new Toyota Etios and Liva series cars are as follows:
Etios Xclusive petrol Rs 6,05,900
Etios Xclusive diesel Rs 7,13,243
Etios Liva Xclusive petrol Rs 4,95,349
Etios Liva Xclusive diesel Rs 6,05,400
Mahindra Scorpio special edition
The Mahindra Scorpio special edition has leather shod steering wheel, dual tone leather seats, gear lever, glossy wood trim on the dashboard and centre console, chrome alloy wheels, chequered flag decals on the exterior as well as added equipment such as a roof mounted DVD player with a 9-inch screen along with dual front airbags.

| The Mahindra Scorpio special edition. |
The Scorpio special edition will be available in the high-end VLX trim of the 4x2 variant that comes for Rs 11.02 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and the special edition could be priced a tad higher (prices not yet announced).
The Scorpio VLX comes with electric outer rear view mirrors, power windows, power steering, a Bluetooth equipped double-DIN stereo with steering-mounted controls, ABS, cruise control, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and wipers along with tyre pressure monitor, among others.
The special edition Scorpio is propelled by a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine which comes with 120 PS power along with a 290 Nm torque and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
But how well the special editions of the Toyota Etios and Liva along with the Mahindra Scorpio will fend off competition in this depressed Indian market (but ahead of the festive season) is to be seen.

City diesel, XUV500 W4 to jack up Honda and Mahindra’s sales
Honda’s plan to introduce a diesel variant of the City would see a surge in sales while a cheaper version of the XUV500 from Mahindra, the W4, could also jack up the XUV’s numbers (which has already been commendable).
The Mahindra XUV500 W4 does come with a host of adorable features (and at a lower price) like dual air-conditioning, MP3 player, and six-way adjustable driver’s seat along with electronically adjustable rear view mirrors.
Executive director and president of Mahindra and Mahindra (automotive and farm equipment divisions) Pawan Goenka said, “The XUV500 has seen great response from car buffs. With over 74,000 vehicles on the road within two years of its launch, the XUV500 is one of our most successful rollouts.”
Honda’s highly popular sedan, the Honda City’s fourth-generation car, is set to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show this month with a refurbished design and is likely to be more spacious than the current model. It would come with premium features also, with one of the USPs being a diesel variant.
This plan of rolling out a diesel variant stems from the fact that the Amaze, with a diesel version, is riding a success wave with 35,000 cars already being offloaded since April.
Honda seems to be making an effort to rev up volumes and will also offer the new City in six to eight variants of 1.5 litre petrol and diesel engines. There would be an automatic transmission option also.
The City is somewhat based on the Jazz platform (which has been stopped owing to its feeble response) and the City is being made in a way so that it catches the eye of C-segment customers.
The City would be available with bigger wrap around clear lens headlamps with projector lights and come with reworked integrated LED tail lamps on the backside.
The car has been made bigger to take the place of the Civic also, which has been phased out and may carry a price tag of about Rs 10 lakh.
Mahindra XUV500 W4
Mahindra has also been bitten by the ‘budget SUV’ bug so far as the XUV500 goes and it is bringing in an entry-level variant of the SUV, christened the W4, in a bid to give its popular vehicle a further sales push, pricing it almost at a steal (Rs 10.83 lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai).
The Mahindra XUV500 W4 does come with a host of adorable features (and at a lower price) like dual air-conditioning, MP3 player, and six-way adjustable driver’s seat along with electronically adjustable rear view mirrors.

| The Mahindra XUV500 W4. |
The second and third rows stay foldable like the high-end XUV’s other models.
Other features like LED daytime running lights mated with a projector headlamp cluster and the chrome festooned grille stay in this variant.
Mechanically also, the XUV500 W4 is almost the same compared to the higher versions. The W4 comes with ABS, EBD and four-wheel disc brakes. It has a 2.2 litre CRDe engine that belts out 142 PS power and 300 Nm torque.
The new Mahindra XUV500 comes with a six-speed manual transmission.
Despite a few deletions, the XUV500’s W4 is still better equipped than the likes of Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano (with a slightly higher price though). But a disadvantage of this model launch is that it may witness cannibalisation from cars in Mahindra’s own stable like the higher variants of the Scorpio.
So, a popular diesel car along with a more spacious new Honda City and Mahindra’s cheaper XUV500 W4 are surely going to jack up fortunes of the two auto majors.

Mahindra Reva rolls out electric vehicle REVAi
Even as global auto giants such as Nissan and GM’s Chevrolet roll out their pet electric vehicles or EVs, India is not far behind with Mahindra Reva launching the REVAi through five dealers in Pune. Unilke the Chevrolet Volt or Nissan Leaf, which could be available in India in a couple of years, the home-grown REVAi will roll out soon.
The Volt and Leaf EVs, when launched in India, could be priced above Rs 15 lakh, forcing the average Indian car buyer to shy away despite being EVs (which have been created to keep the environment clean and trim running costs substantially when compared to a petrol or diesel car).
But the REVAi is set to be affordably priced around Rs 3.10 lakh (the standard model). Also, in order to woo customers, Mahindra has rolled out a finance plan whereby buyers can shell out Rs 1 lakh as deposit and pay Rs 7,999 for the next three years.
After the three-year period, the car owner can claim the deposit and let go the car or forgo the deposit and take the car instead.
The REVAi can go up to 80 km per charge and both performance and battery life are optimised using a technique called Energy Management System. There is a regenerative braking mechanism employed that facilitates the pumping of energy into the battery when brakes are applied to slow down the car.
The EV has a ‘boost’ mode for power and acceleration, whereas ‘hill restraint’ ensures better navigation in an incline. The car does not have either a clutch or gear and can touch a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. It can reach from 0 to 40 km in just seven seconds. The REVAi is a two-seater hatchback now and the four-seater version will hit the country’s markets next year.
Mahindra Reva’s Bangalore plant will begin operations in April after which annual capacity will more than double to 30,000 cars per annum.
“We are happy to launch the REVAi in Pune where there are many who want to lap up our vehicles. With climate change and carbon credits becoming key issues today, eco-friendly vehicles have become need of the hour,” said R Chandramouli, chief of operations, Mahindra Reva.
“The EV market is ready to grow rapidly. Mahindra’s vast distribution network, along with our unique finance plan will help us make significant inroads into the local market,” added Chandramouli.
Reva was founded in 1994 as Reva Electric Car Company, a joint venture between the Maini Group of Bangalore and AEV of USA. Mahindra Group took majority stake in May this year and renamed it Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt Ltd.
It seems foreign players are not keen on bringing in their EVs owing to lack of good roads, electricity, parking spaces and unavailability of charging stations.
Mahindra Reva exports its electric cars to European countries including UK, Norway, Spain and France. It also sells its cars to neighbouring markets like Bhutan, Nepal and Malaysia.
Although, the launch of Reva cars like REVAi could be a trendsetter, lack of charging stations could take a massive toll on Mahindra Reva’s electric car dream and if the government does not put infrastructure projects on the fast lane, then the concept of EVs could witness a slow death in India.

Will Mahindra Vibe hatchback revive Verito’s fortunes?
Even after renaming the Logan Verito, Mahindra has not seen success with its sedan, and now, India’s biggest SUV maker is trying its luck with a new hatchback, the Verito Vibe, the price of which is on the economical side at Rs 5.63 lakh to Rs 6.49 lakh (considering the high-end hatch is feature-rich) but the price excludes octroi.
The Vibe delivers a fuel efficiency of 20.8 km per litre (ARAI certified) and has a boot space of 330 litres and best in class space of a whopping 1,740 X 1,540 mm. The company is offering a warranty of three years or one lakh kilometres.
The Vibe produces a peak power of 65 PS at 4,000 rpm and 160 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm, which is great for a hatch.
Available in three variants, D2, D4 and D6, the New Verito Vibe has been designed with a three-box body style with a boot separate from the passenger compartment, similar to sedans. The Vibe’s looks are simply awesome.
The Vibe also has another feature: It is fitted with a driver information system which provides real time updates on mileage, temperature and distance, making the Vibe a feature-rich compact family car.
The car has seen Rs 60 crore being pumped into its development and is based on the Renault Logan platform.
The Verito Vibe’s parts are almost 80 per cent common with the Verito and the new hatchback is available only in the 1.5 litre DCI diesel version.
With its two cars, the Vibe hatchback and Verito sedan, the SUV maker will compete in a category which will have a sales potential of over one million.
With this hatchback, Mahindra will slug it out with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift, Swift Dzire along with the Honda Brio and Amaze, among others. So, you have the Vibe competing with the sedans as well as the hatchbacks.
But Mahindra feels the price is economical as the Vibe is Rs 40,000 cheaper than Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire and almost Rs 1.52 lakh lower than Honda Amaze, although offering the space of a sedan.
President of Mahindra automotive and farm equipment segment Pawan Goenka said, “With the roll out of the Vibe, we will cater to a wider range of car buyers (covering both sedan and hatch buyers). Most of the sub-four metre cars have been derived from a hatchback, which leads to compromise on space. But the Vibe has been created out of a sedan and offers the best space in its class along with features as well as significant value to customers.”
The Verito sedan sells around 700 cars a month and will Mahindra’s success story carry on with its SUVs only? The company is upbeat on the new hatch and has set aside a large production capacity for the Vibe.
But customers would have a limited choice as there would not be any petrol variant of the Vibe. Even though a diesel variant is popular in India, the Central government’s move to raise prices of diesel vehicles could hit sales of cars like the Vibe.
Moreover, with small families (who Mahindra will target) preferring petrol cars, Mahindra could do with a petrol option.
So, will the Verito Vibe, with its economical pricing, space of a sedan and its feature-richness change the Verito’s fortunes?

Will XUV500 become Mahindra’s highest-selling SUV?
Mahindra and Mahindra’s rollout of global sports utility vehicle (SUV) XUV500 has seen a new Cheetah born in the Indian market, and considering the snazzy looks of the global SUV and the judicious pricing, it won’t take long for this global SUV to become the highest-selling SUV in the Mahindra stable.
Mahindra’s XUV500 has been very competitively priced. The base variant, W6, comes for around Rs 10.80 lakh, while the mid variant W8 2WD (4x2) is priced at Rs 11.95 lakh. The top-end variant W8 AWD (All-Wheel Drive) will come for Rs 12.88 lakh.
The styling of the Mahindra XUV500 has been done keeping in mind the Cheetah, which is not only agile but powerful too.
The XUV500 is propelled by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that offers 140 bhp of power, 330 Nm of torque and has been mated with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 km in less than six seconds. Besides having an excellent power output and pick up, Mahindra’s new SUV is capable of a fuel economy of 15.1 km to a litre. Not bad for an SUV.
The XUV500’s front grille no doubt offers a unique visual experience.
Accessories such as LED parking lamps, projector headlamps, integrated bumpers, alloy wheels and twin-exhausts give a fillip to this unique visual appeal.
Without wasting any time, Mahindra has already started bookings at dealerships across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune, and as a start, it has received a phenomenal response of over 6,000 bookings in just a few days only.
Upbeat on the new XUV500 roll out, Anand Mahindra said, “The XUV500 is our first vehicle in the global SUV platform and is another proud moment in the automotive journey of our company. We have introduced a vehicle that delivers high technology and performance at an unbeatable price. I am sure the SUV will create a brand new category and become popular in India as well as abroad.”
The SUV will come in seven colours, namely, Volcano Black, Dolphin Grey, Moondust Silver, Opulent Purple, Amazon Green, Tuscan Red and Satin White.
The XUV500 comes with a six-inch touch screen infotainment system that includes FM, CD player with MP3 compatibility, USB and iPod connectivity as well as global positioning system or GPS.
Mahindra XUV500 has dual heating, ventilation and air conditioning or HVAC along with fully-automatic temperature control.
Other features include audio, blue sense mobile phone connectivity and cruise control buttons present on the steering wheel, voice commands, light and rain sensors, intellipark or intelligent reverse parking system along with a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Mahindra XUV500 offers a great deal of comfort in the inside, coming with leather seats, fully-foldable middle and last row seats, power adjustable and foldable outside rear view mirrors, tilt and telescopic steering and an 8-way adjustable driver's seat that comes with lumbar support.
Also, standard features include anti-lock braking system or ABS with electronic brake force distribution or EBD, six airbags (front, side and curtain) and electronic stability program or ESP.
As per initial response (6,000 bookings in just few days!), the Mahindra XUV500 seems all set to upstage the Scorpio as well as the Xylo to become Mahindra’s highest-selling SUV in India in the near to medium term.

![]() |
| The Mojo |
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is betting big on its distribution network to rev up its motorcycles sales, a fiercely-competitive segment the company has entered into with the launch of two bikes — the 110 cc Stallio and the 300 cc Mojo.
The Stallio, whose brand image will be spruced up by none other than Aamir Khan, comes in two variants and carries a price tag of between Rs 41,199 and Rs 44,699 (ex showroom Pune). The Mojo has been priced at Rs 1.75 lakh (ex showroom Pune).
![]() |
| The Stallio |
Mahindra has seen buoyant sales almost consistently with three of its utility vehicle models - Scorpio, Xylo and Bolero - which helped the company register sales of 12,994 units in August 2010 against only 11,443 units in same period a year ago. Sales of the Logan, manufactured under a joint venture with Renault, which had failed to find many takers earlier, revved up by a whopping 96.08 per cent to 1,000 units during September, compared to 510 units in the same month a year ago.
An upbeat Anand Mahindra, who is vice-chairman and managing director of M&M, said, “All markets are competitive. But we have a slew of competitive advantages that we feel will be useful for taking us through.”
The Stallio has maximum power of 5.4 kw (7.3 ps) @ 7500 rpm, maximum torque of 8.0 n-m @ 5500 rpm, start is a electric start /kick start, ignition system – CDI, fuel tank has 13.7 litres capacity with a reserve capacity of 1.6 litres, clutch is wet multi-plate, transmission type / gear box is 4 gears constant mesh, brake type at front /rear is 130 mm dia – internal expanding (drum) (front & rear), and suspension type (front & rear) are telescopic hydraulic-damped (front), 5-step adjustable, coiled hydraulic-damped (rear).
The battery is a 12V/ 5Ah one while the head lamp is 12V–35W/35W – halogen bulb (multi reflector type). Mahindra Stallio will come in Derby Red, Colt Black, Equus Blue, Buckskin Yellow and Ranch Green. The bike will be available from Diwali.
The Mojo 300 cc comes with liquid cooled 292 cc engine, 4-valve single cylinder petrol engine with fuel injection (like MPFI), power of 26 bhp @8500 rpm, a torque (maximum) of 24 nm @7000 rpm, gas charged rear shock absorbers, radial caliper brakes, a six-speed manual transmission, LED tail lamps, tubeless tyres and halogen lamp multi-reflector head lamps.
Its ignition system is known as electronic control unit and has fuel tank capacity of 15.5 litres. Its transmission type /gear box is a constant mesh, 6-speed one. The Mojo is an Italian design bike and is targeted at the youth. It will be available in three months and will come in two colours - red and black.
The Stallio and Mojo have an awesome futuristic look and we at The Paperless give a thumbs up to the two bikes which we feel will surely revolutionise the motorcycles industry in India.
