Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar rocks
Response: Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar, which has been co-produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision and Eros International, had rolled out in more than 2,000 screens across the globe and mopped up Rs 53 crore in the country and Rs 11 crore overseas in first three days of its release, which is really rocking.
The day 1 earnings stood at Rs 11.25 crore, which is a record of sorts for Rockstar, making it the seventh largest first day collections in Bollywood.
The first weekend net box office collections were an astounding Rs 37 crore even as the gross figure was at Rs 53 crore.
The Ranbir-starrer film has been made on a budget of Rs 60 crore.
Film type: Musical thriller.
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Nargis Fakhri, Shammi Kapoor and Aditi Rao Hydari.
Director: Imtiaz Ali.
Time of movie: About two and half hours.
Story: The story of Rockstar is about Janardan Jakhar (played by Ranbir Kapoor) a good-for-nothing, studying at a college in Delhi.
Janardan is a struggling musician and his friends do not see much hope in him.
But Janardan is determined to change everything. He is inspired by a well-wisher who reveals the secret behind all great successes.
He tells Janardhan that to succeed, he needs to fall in love and then break his heart. Only then can he become a rock star.
This prompts Janardhan to get close to Heer (played by Nargis Fakhri), the most beautiful as well as popular girl in the college.
The duo’s friendship is somewhat unconventional. Then Heer and Janardhan break up. Janardhan joins his family business. However, fate has something else in store for the two.
They meet again and Janardhan goes on a journey of self-discovery and unwittingly finds out that he’s actually the rock star he always wanted to be…
Review: Rockstar’s initial moments are real fun and the rock star himself is completely in sync with the audience.
Rockstar portrays the life in a Delhi college as well as the scenic beauty of the city commendably.
Rockstar is like Imtiaz Ali’s film Jab We Met, and those enthralled by the Shashid Kapoor-starrer, will also give a thumbs up to Rockstar.
In the first half of the film, we get to see Ranbir’s (or Janardhan’s) unconventional relationship with his girlfriend Heer, where he goes out on impromptu outings with girlfriend and drinks desi alcohol with her.
Heer also gives nod to these moments as she wants to experiment with life before marrying and settling down.
However, the second part becomes a tad slow and boring. There are many scenes that are unrealistic but AR Rehman’s music and the film’s songs are simply mind blowing.
This coupled with Ranbir’s awesome acting have simply put Rockstar on a higher pedestal. Go see it, as it’s worth watching Ranbir make Rockstar rock.

Will Barfi! miss the Oscar bus?
Response: Barfi! had opened to an outstanding 70 per cent occupancy and netted Rs 10 crore on Day One but whether it will miss the Oscar bus is a big question mark. During the first weekend, Barfi! won many hearts and grossed a whopping Rs 35 crore revenue.
The worldwide (India and global) collection stands at over Rs 117 crore, with Rs 25 crore coming in from the overseas market itself.
Barfi! mopped up Rs 58.6 crore in the first week itself. The movie saw a 40% slide in business with its collection touching Rs 28.55 crore during the second week.
The sliding trend continued with the third week logging Rs 18.5 crore, a drop of 40 per cent again.
Film type: Romantic comedy.
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana DCruz, Saurabh Shukla and Sumona Chakravarti.
Director: Anurag Basu.
Time of movie: Two and half hours.
Story: Born as a deaf and mute child, Barfi’s parents named him Murphy, from the quintessential Murphy radio of the 1980s.
But Ranbir Kapoor was called by the name Barfi by everyone. Although he was unable to hear and speak, Barfi became popular in his town (Darjeeling) as he was always ready to play a prank, be it on the police or his friend.
His relationship with two young women Shruti (played by Ileana DCruz) and Jhilmil (played by Priyanka Chopra) takes many twists and turns. This makes his life turn turtle.
Does Shruti turn out to be the lucky girl in Barfi! or is it Jhilmil?
Review: There is no doubt that scenes from Barfi! resemble Charlie Chaplin films and this may cast a shadow and spoil its chances from bagging the coveted Oscar.
But Barfi! has been the talk of the town as it has been an outstanding film with mind blowing acting from Ranbir and Priyanka (and of course the unforgettable scenes of Darjeeling).
The music of Barfi! is simply mind boggling. The film deals with physically and mentally challenged people, which is a plus (especially for bagging the Oscar and other awards).
Barfi! is a film for all and go take your kids for two hours of fun-filled entertainment. The movie’s catchline says it all, “Don’t worry, be Barfi!.
Ranbir’s silence has spoken many a words but will similarity to Charlie Chaplin movies cast a shadow on Barfi! and spoil its chances from bagging the sought-after Oscar awards?

Anjaana Anjaani: A good debut
Response: Anjaana Anjaani has found many takers post debut in cities other than south India. At multiplexes and single-screen theatres in the Metros (besides southern cities), it opened to an average 80% occupancy.
However, in the southern cities, Anjaana Anjaani was overshadowed completely by Rajnikanth’s film Robot (Endhran in Tamil) and saw a muted response. Especially in Tamil Nadu, where the Rajnikanth starter was reportedly the only film enthusiasts queued up for with other releases drawing almost a blank.
This, film buffs feel, could have a long-term impact as Rajni mania is likely to spread to other Indian cities as well. Adding to the woes of Anjaana Anjaani is that few critics have given thumbs down to the film even as some say it is a fairly well-made romantic story.
Film type: Romance
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Zayed Khan
Director: Siddharth Anand
Time of movie: Two hours
Story: Ranbir Kapoor or Akash meets Priyanka Chopra (Kiara) in a New York bridge where both attempt suicide as they are unable to cope with their fast-paced life. They, however, postpone their plan and agree to spend 20 days together. In those 20 precious days, they go on a trip to casino city Las Vegas and fulfil their other wishes as well. The plot in Anjaana Anjaani revolves around whether they actually make another suicide attempt.
Review: Anjaana Anjaani is not the usual love story. It gives a new angle to a relationship where strangers (Priyanka and Ranbir) become lovers and later strangers again. But there isn’t anything new in the plot. Anjaana Anjaani is a typical modern day romantic story and the plus point in the film is that both Ranbir’s and Priyanka’s performance have been commendable.
But a film buff sums it up saying it’s pretty slow in the first half but picks up in the second half. He adds to say that Ranbir’s acting was satisfactory while Priyanka failed to deliver. Anjaana Anjaani is a film we recommend, especially if you’re fond of romantic stories.
