Bodyguard shines on Salman Khan appeal

Response: Salman Khan’s Bodyguard has registered a record of sorts, becoming Bollywood’s biggest blockbuster on earnings in the first weekend, grossing over Rs 85 crore in just four days in India and nearly Rs 100 crore when you include collections abroad, mainly on Salman Khan’s appeal.

Salman has provided three hits in a row with Bodyguard, Ready and Dabangg.

Bodyguard is also set to join films such as Ghajini, Dabangg, Ready and Golmaal 3, which have breached the Rs 100-crore revenue mark domestically.

Bodyguard has overtaken the opening week net collections of previous Bollywood blockbusters such as Dabangg and 3 Idiots.

In fact, there is buzz that Bodyguard grossed nearly a whopping Rs 20 crore on the first two days itself, which makes it a clear-cut hit.

Made on a production budget of Rs 62 crore, the print and promotion cost makes the total cost of Bodyguard around Rs 80 crore.

Film type: Action

Cast: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Mahesh Manjrekar and Raj Babbar

Director: Siddique

Time of movie: 2 hours 15 minutes

Story: In Bodyguard, Salman plays the role of Lovely Singh, who is the high-profile security guard of Divya (played by Kareena Kapoor) and Lovely has been ordered to follow Divya right from her college till she goes to bed at night.

Divya is taunted in college because Lovely constantly accompanies her and in order to get out of Lovely’s clutches, Divya plays a prank on the phone with Lovely, posing as a woman who is smitten by him, and in the process, finds that she has actually fallen in love with Lovely.

Lovely falls in love with his anonymous lover and goes in search of her. So, what happens when Lovely finds his girl?

Salman Khan’s Bodyguard is a concoction of three films: A south Indian film and its story somewhat reflects Shah Rukh Khan’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hain and Aamir Khan’s Ghajini.

Review: Bodyguard has done something which no other film has been able to do before. The endless hilarious scenes don’t make you laugh, the story is so confusing that you wonder what it is and even the romance is not earth shattering although the chemistry between Salman and Kareena is an upside for Bodyguard.

The one thing the film has is good action sequences. Even though Bodyguard has lots of it, it falls short even on this front if Dabangg is your benchmark.

What makes the film a hit is (no prizes for guessing) the Salman Khan brand and his role as a straight forward human being makes him a tad different this time and this is probably what impresses Salman’s  fans.

Yes, if you’re a fan of Salman Khan, his appeal in Bodyguard will surely impress you, but if you expect the same versatility in his role as in Dabangg, you may be a tad disappointed.
