Mahindra special edition Scorpio may rev up sales, Skoda needs ad blitz for new Yeti

We have some budget SUVs like Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and Tata’s crossover Aria raid the Rs 10 lakh SUV market, and in a bid to rev up the Scorpio’s sagging sales, Mahindra and Mahindra has again rolled out a limited (special) edition of the SUV (of which only 500 cars are up for grabs) for Rs 11.88 lakh (Delhi showroom price) while Skoda needs to do a bit of an ad blitz for the refurbished Yeti that will roll out around June.

The new Scorpio will come in a pearl white colour with chequered flag decals along the sides. The alloys are ditto similar to the previous model with the difference being that they are now chrome plated instead of silver.

While the exterior is almost similar to the standard model, the new car does have some additional features. Cosmetic changes in the interiors are a highly-glossy wood finish central console, a gear-shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel and lever.

There are some additional safety features also with the Scorpio now being safer inside, courtesy the new dual front SRS airbags.

The fabric seats are no more there and are now made of tan and beige European leather. The new limited edition Scorpio also has a roof-mounted DVD player, which comes with a nine-inch display.

Despite most of the changes not being major, it is still the same Scorpio that is offered with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder mHawk diesel engine that comes mated with a five-speed manual transmission belting out 120 HP and 290 Nm torque.

Mahindra had also rolled out a limited edition model in the previous year to give the Scorpio brand, which became highly popular a couple of years back, a fillip.

Mahindra is coming up with the overhauled version of the Scorpio next year, and before that, the company does not want to see the current version’s sales dwindle beyond a point.

Skoda Yeti

Meanwhile, Skoda will roll out a refurbished variant of crossover SUV, the Yeti, in about two months, which will feature fresh styling elements and a new-look interior. On the exterior, the 2014 Skoda Yeti will have a new grille, headlamps and bumper.

The Skoda logo, similar to that of the new Superb, will be on the bonnet of the Yeti. Earlier, it was on the grille. There are changes to the Yeti’s rear also. The overall design is ditto although the new Yeti will have fresh tail lamps.

Inside, the dashboard, the layout will be the same. However, the steering wheel and the clocks as well as the audio system will see a change.

The Yeti will remain a diesel SUV. The engine will be the similar two-litre diesel from the car now in use and will be of two versions: the 110 PS for the front-wheel drive Yeti and 140 PS for the all-wheel drive variant.

The new Yeti may come with a DSG dual clutch automatic.

The size is one of the advantages of the Yeti crossover as it offers high-end features packed in a sleek design. But the Yeti would be a crossover mainly for the city’s roads and an automatic option in the new model could do a world of good to Skoda.
