Anil Thadani acquired the distribution rights for Rs 22 crore and the film also turned out a money spinner for him and others.

The Hindi film has made a whopping Rs 30 crore in India while there was also a Tamil version that netted Rs 1.5 crore.

It was made on a budget of less than Rs 20 crore and is an Ekta Kapoor production. The Dirty Picture has turned Vidya Balan into a star really.

Story: The Dirty Picture is basically based on the rags to riches to rags story of South sensation, Silk Smitha, who from the life of a destitute became one the favourites in Tamil cinema but had to commit suicide after suffering huge losses after she tried to venture into film production.

Reshma (played by Vidya Balan) is a girl from a small town who has dreamt of making it big in a big city. She goes to Chennai but has no money but only her determination to succeed.

In The Dirty Picture, Reshma struggles to find her first break but ultimately gets it, playing the role of an item girl. But there is a break after this as she is still far away from achieving stardom.

However, the entire film industry is enamoured by her looks and she uses this to her advantage and her fan following grows manifold within a short period.

But later, her career graph goes downhill and she finds it difficult to survive in an industry that has no place for emotional bonding.

Review: The Dirty Picture has brought out the eclectic side of Vidya Balan, who can arguably be called the most-versatile actress in Bollywood today.

From a composed role in the film No One Killed Jessica to the item girl in The Dirty Picture, Vidya has showed that she has it all. She has single-handedly steered The Dirty Picture to making it a clear-cut hit.

Her seductive role along with her confidence had made her the perfect Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture. Besides the sleazy scenes, which have scored a perfect 10, the dialogues add to the colour of the film.

But the story seems to be a leaf out of a Madhur Bhandarkar film. Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor do play their part commendably but it’s Vidya Balan all the way that steers the film to making it a superhit. A very well-made film, cleansweep hit The Dirty Picture is a must see movie.
